Just wanted to give some suggestions on how to get KaZaA Lite working. Originally, i tried installing K++ or some wierd hacked version. I spent days trying to figure it out. Then i tried the regular KaZaA Lite version. That worked beautifully. You have to do all of this in your root account (at least i think so)
The way i got my install to work was pretty straightforward and reproducable:
1. I went to
http://frankscorner.org/wine/ and clicked on the link for Kazaa Lite. I tried the instructions listed but they didn't work for me. Instead, just download the dll files with the link provided at the bottom of that page.
2. Get Wine version 20030115 or higher. I had problems with the version that installs by default when you type "emerge wine". I went to /usr/portage/apps-emulation/wine and selected the newest one.
3. Edit the .wine/config file so it emulates win98. For this, you have to uncomment the ; in front of the obvious spot.
4. Just unzip the dlls into the ~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/System/ directory.
5. (not sure if this is optional or not) Download Internet Explorer 5.5 spk2 setup, and install it. For some reason, kazaa flips out if IE isn't installed. I'm not sure if version matters, but this has worked for me.
6. Install kazaa lite. the file that i tried it on was kl200e.exe. This installed with no problems. As a bonus, the desktop icon appears on your desktop in Gnome!!
That's basically all i did to get it to work. I didn't change any of the overrides for Kazaa. The defaults seemed to work, after installing IE. Also, you must run this as root. Not sure why, probably has something to do with permissions.
if for some reason, you screw up or just want to start over, just delete your .wine directory. when you type wine again, it will recreate it.
