I've followed frank's corner and winehq instructions to run kazaa and none work.
It always says "Topsearch.dll is missing" !
I've never heard noone complaining about this error.... :-/

Did you use win98 dll? I heard that using dll's from a win XP installation
doesn't work.
If you don't have them, you can download them from this page (as a tarball).

P.S. Carefull, the page is in dutch

I did use win98 dlls :-/
With IE6 installed as they say...
But I'll try to use those ones.
But topsearch.dll is not in the list so I guess it wont make any difference...
Maybe I have to uncheck some option that requires this dll...

EDIT: host can't be resolved ...

EDIT2:
Great... before deleting my vmware win98 instalation, I installed kazaa lite there and searched for topsearch.dll and no file found!

Try the 1.72 version of Kazaa Lite if you can find it. I have less problems with it than the newer 2.0 versions.

I get nothing with Gnutella because im behind a router with a firewall. I had no problem making Kazaa Lite 1.72 work. I havent tried 2.0 tough.

I remember finding some sites on the internet. I used winetools ( a program you cant emerge I think ) to install Kazaa Lite, then I found a couple of different list of dlls I needed on the net so I searched and downloaded all those dlls from all the list, then it worked.

Those 2 have WAYYYY less users than kazaa... :-(
and I loved giFT, but now, everytime I logon only about 10 users are online....
Someone told me gnutella was great for movies so I searched for .avi. Only 2 movies came up (with decent size for good quality)...

What other p2p do you use with centralized networks (DC, lopster and else are excluded) ?

Kazaa Lite with wine20030115

  • Quote

Post by iamtired » Wed Feb 19, 2003 7:57 am

Just wanted to give some suggestions on how to get KaZaA Lite working. Originally, i tried installing K++ or some wierd hacked version. I spent days trying to figure it out. Then i tried the regular KaZaA Lite version. That worked beautifully. You have to do all of this in your root account (at least i think so)

The way i got my install to work was pretty straightforward and reproducable:

1. I went to http://frankscorner.org/wine/ and clicked on the link for Kazaa Lite. I tried the instructions listed but they didn't work for me. Instead, just download the dll files with the link provided at the bottom of that page.

2. Get Wine version 20030115 or higher. I had problems with the version that installs by default when you type "emerge wine". I went to /usr/portage/apps-emulation/wine and selected the newest one.

3. Edit the .wine/config file so it emulates win98. For this, you have to uncomment the ; in front of the obvious spot.

4. Just unzip the dlls into the ~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/System/ directory.

5. (not sure if this is optional or not) Download Internet Explorer 5.5 spk2 setup, and install it. For some reason, kazaa flips out if IE isn't installed. I'm not sure if version matters, but this has worked for me.

6. Install kazaa lite. the file that i tried it on was kl200e.exe. This installed with no problems. As a bonus, the desktop icon appears on your desktop in Gnome!!

That's basically all i did to get it to work. I didn't change any of the overrides for Kazaa. The defaults seemed to work, after installing IE. Also, you must run this as root. Not sure why, probably has something to do with permissions.

if for some reason, you screw up or just want to start over, just delete your .wine directory. when you type wine again, it will recreate it.

I've always used Direct Connect as p2p, and dctc is way better than any DC client for windows, but you gave to admit that there is no hub with as many users as kazaa server (since it is a centralized network...).
I wish hub-admins here in Portugal would link their hubs....

Hello !

I emerged wine last night and read this thread and many others in order to get kazaa lite working (the only reason for I emerged wine). I used the tricks of Iamtired but wine blocks with an error message:

Code: Select all

seb@idk-002c307 seb $ wine /home/pub/src/kazaa.exe
/usr/lib/wine/bin/wine: cannot determine executable type for 'Z:\home\pub\src\kazaa.exe'
seb@idk-002c307 seb $
What a pity ! Could someone help me please ?

Regards,
Sébastien.

Kazaa is bad. Why support their evil ways (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/0 ... ode=thread) even by using kazaa lite? I have thoroughly enjoyed DirectConnect (although I don't really like the linux version(s)). But for gentoo I like using mldonkey. It is best for sharing big files like 'home videos' or gentoo staged livecd's.
