the only other thing that i can think of that hasnt been mentioned would be a genkernel that didnt suck. it's a great idea, since no n00b wants to hack around in his kernel when he's just getting started, but ehhh. needs some work

graphical installer++
I'll second that

I don't feel superior when using CLI, I just like it and I don't want any GUI candy! I'm not against optional GUI installer.

It's 100x more efficient to use CLI than GUI.

I agree with Miqorz. There's nothing wrong with using Knoppix to install. Furthermore, if people want their hands held while installing Gentoo, what's wrong with using Vida Linux? Let them deal with all the headaches of developing a GUI install, and let the Gentoo devs concentrate on making Portage rock like a coked up pirate with a ninja babe for a mother.

Actually they can hurt, if the developers currently working on Gentoo as it is now must spread themselves even thinner to get a GUI installer working. There is no need for a GUI installer, optional or not, in mainline Gentoo. Ever hear of Vida Linux?

Yeah I mean seriously, we don't even have reverse dependency checking.

Speak for yourself; I had no problems when I was starting up. Although I do agree that genkernel is useless.

Yeah, devs should really improve Gentoo as it is now, not make any installers.

Why are you people so anti-GUI? Faggots!

Besides, there already is a GUI installer in the works.

Not only are you an idiot but a homophobe.

Can't you think of a more original way to spread your hate? Like killing yourself?

Faggot, eh? My fiancee would be surprised. I dislike GUI installers because I see no reason for ignorant people to install Linux. Leave the installs to people who know what they're doing. Hell, leave Linux to people who are willing to learn and stick to Windows or Mac if you want hand-holding.

Yes, I am an elitist asshole. No, I don't care if you dislike elitists.

i'd like an installer. not necessisarily graphical. but only if it inculded power user features. i've tried to make my own in the past, but the install changed on me and i fear anything i do will need regular maintainence...

i dislike the CLI install because, well, it needs too much hand holding. i just want to sit down, choose a variety of options to put into a config file, then leave for a day. as it stands the best I can do is to make a very basic script during install and find it break trying to emerge cksources or fail becuase i put -foimt-frame-pointers in my cflags...

that install was nice the first two times, but beyond that it loses the novelty and you wonder why someone doesn't just put some script out to do this...

Learn a little bash scripting and the install is as automated as you want it to be.

Try installing LFS, gentoo is a fucking cake walk.

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here.

But seriously, How fucking hard is it to type emerge a few times and to type some commands directly off a website?

Get over it and learn some command, You'll fucking need it after the install.

I gurantee it. If you can't install gentoo, chances are you won't have the experience to admin the system.

I wouldn't even say that, From my experience it's for those fed up with defaults and are welcome to learning new things to get the experience they allways wanted in a Linux system rather than fucking GUI installers which offer limited flexability.

Well, that would be the advanced group
A GUI installer for Gentoo would really take away the Gentoo magic
