replace gentoo-sources with vanilla to please Andrew Morton and get wider testing of vanilla - besides special needs people are always free to emerge something else but we should probably default to vanilla for users to avoid bugs caused by patching, it would be a great service to the kernel developers and the users in that we would get wider testing for the base.
Not sure if this is a good idea. Installing un-tested software by default I think will piss people off, especially if they were expecting a "stable" system with the "x86" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS. Then again, by this logic, we should stick with 2.4.X since the entire 2.6 tree is still unstable (and won't be for a while). I guess that's why 2004.2 defaults to 2.4.X......
People are more than free to switch to -mm or whatever after they install. In fact, most Gentoo people will do it anyway......
