Wishlist for Gentoo 2005.1

  • Quote

Post by tempest » Sun Oct 10, 2004 8:33 pm

What would you like to see in release 2005.1 ? Remember, devs are looking... My personal wishlist includes (in no particular order):
  • udev working "out of the box", after installation
  • reverse dependencies in portage (e.g. unmerging something causes unmerging of everything dependent)
  • script for automated installation included in the livecd
  • ftgl in portage; ebuild for older versions have been in bugzilla for countless months and never got included (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47048)
Note: I know that 2005.0 will be out before 2005.1... but talking about the latter lets us unleash all our long-term wishes for Gentoo
For every problem there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong.

Another vote for using UDEV as default. It's great for managing lots of USB widgets and having each one mounted in their own mountpoint.

nuke all of kernel 2.4 and related stuff - default to nptl and udev

replace gentoo-sources with vanilla to please Andrew Morton and get wider testing of vanilla - besides special needs people are always free to emerge something else but we should probably default to vanilla for users to avoid bugs caused by patching, it would be a great service to the kernel developers and the users in that we would get wider testing for the base.

I really like the rhgb concept, it works nicely, let's use it as a default - no more nasty framebuffers and grub settings to tinker with.

A "firstboot" config tool, instead of editing all those text files after bootstrapping and emerging the system - plus I always forget one step or two and I have to reboot again.. that bums me out sometimes.

Default to using hardened Gentoo - a great project and we need default securiity on our Linux boxes, at least parts of it would be nice, like default PaX and stack-protection. And a default firewall, could probably be done fairly easy with an ebuild that set the config files and a file in /etc that could open different services correctly.

and many other suggestions but stop now.

Things I would like:
- working PCMCIA wireless support on the installation disk.
- Defaulting to udev, NPTL-enabled glibc, 2.6 kernel and headers, and GCC 3.4.

:)

Thanx.

Widely tested livecds, so the Installation forum doesn't get filled up with people saying that they don't boot... :P

Actually, what I'd like to see is it being possible to install every time - i.e. not having emerge system fail due to autoconf needing perl, etc. When it's installed, it's easy to get around problems like that, but while installing it can be very different. Letting users knacker their own installs is part of the fun, but having it be impossible to install even if they do everything right it not so good.

Hmm.... I could make a Python script for a stage3 installation. I figure that anyone who does not do a stage3 install should know what they are doing. Does anyone want me to do that?

id just be happy with an emerge system that works without me having to searche the forums and bugs when im using x86

i did an install and emerge system failed on 3 packages without dependances merged in order also i would like to see emerge always produce the same results including when i use options like -k

that said im pretty happy with the gentoo is at the moment and never really bother about the releases as emerge sync changes it anyway

I also wish we'd get on board with 2.6/NPTL/udev. It's going on a year since 2.6.0 was released. This year has been a pain in the ass with regards to liveCDs.

Maybe we could have 2 livecds: one that uses 2.4/devfs and one that uses 2.6/udev/nptl.

or possibly two kernel images/coomand-line boots and defaulting to the 2.6/udev one?

How about an option to boot up X, with a Knoppix-like driver/resolution/refresh detection script? I want terminals man, terminals.

There already are 2.4 and 2.6 kernels on the LiveCDs with the 2.6 kernels listed as "smp".

I'd like a beta version to be released so that it gets a wider exposure for testing.

A GUI for installing Gentoo would make Gentoo more popular. :)

Don't gimme that crap that it's not hardcore enough, sure it's easy as it is now, but still. I think Fedora and Mandrake n00bs have the right to experience GENTOO.

Oh and the GUI is under development AFAIK, I hope it's done when 2005.1 is out.

Not sure if this is a good idea. Installing un-tested software by default I think will piss people off, especially if they were expecting a "stable" system with the "x86" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS. Then again, by this logic, we should stick with 2.4.X since the entire 2.6 tree is still unstable (and won't be for a while). I guess that's why 2004.2 defaults to 2.4.X......

People are more than free to switch to -mm or whatever after they install. In fact, most Gentoo people will do it anyway......

Reiser4 support, default ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~arch" or maybe -*?, NPTL, UDEV, mm-sources, linux26-headers and so on, good stuff ;)

IF we're going to go with NPTL support by default, I hope the mono garbage collection issues get sorted out.

NPTL is just for booting right? Or is it for overal performance?

NPTL is native posix thread library (support). Basically it allows (correct me if I'm wrong on this one) threads to actually be threads, rather than seperate processes. This means when you look in top at a multi-threaded application, you no longer see lots of different processes, just one process (with lots of threads).

This speeds up things like Java, makes multithreaded apps more efficient and also is a lot tidier from a process table point of view.
