confused about install options with limited internet access

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

confused about install options with limited internet access

i talked this out with guys on #gentoo last night but i'd still like to clarify because i am confused

What i want:

i only have a 56k modem which i cannot be connect to the internet on for long periods of time. i would ideally like to do a stage 2 install. i can download isos and large sets of packages at university in a very short time.

my questions:

1. can i do a stage1 install from the latest uni iso without being connected to the internet for long periods? if not what prevents this?

2. can i do a stage2 install from the latest uni iso and by downloading the correct stage without being connected to the internet for long periods?

3. if i do a stage 3 install what actually is installed with the described standard optimisations? how is this different from GRP package installation

4. if i don't intend to actually change any of the optimisation settings myself is there still a benefit of stage 1 install over stage 3? i assume a stage 1 will "auto detect" a certain level of optimisation requirements???

5. if i do not want to compile kde or gnome at the initial install point, what is necessary to compile them later, again avoiding long download periods and preferably from local source? is it easy to use GRP packages in the mean time and then replace them?

i understand some of the answers to these questions will depend on what i decide to do but please try to address them seperately so i understand the basics and then we can discuss further :D

Take a look at the alternative installation guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml) Section 4: Installing from Stage 1 without network access. This method should as well work for a stage 2 or stage 3 install
3. if i do a stage 3 install what actually is installed with the described standard optimisations? how is this different from GRP package installation
The hole thing called system. for me that is:

And GRP only matters after building the system. Using GRP means that you use precompiled packages for all the other things on your computer as well.
4. if i don't intend to actually change any of the optimisation settings myself is there still a benefit of stage 1 install over stage 3? i assume a stage 1 will "auto detect" a certain level of optimisation requirements???
indeed if you do a stage 1 install you have to do every optimization yourself. If you don't want to have nothing to do with optimization, ist much better to make a stage 3 install.
5. if i do not want to compile kde or gnome at the initial install point, what is necessary to compile them later, again avoiding long download periods and preferably from local source? is it easy to use GRP packages in the mean time and then replace them?
yes thats trivial.
BTW I learned everything I told you here by reading the brilliant documentation.

thanks for your help

i actually continued to read the documentation and answered most of the questions myself anyway - it does seem strange to me that you need to read nearly all of the documentation to answer questions that should be made clear in the choosing your installation type bit right at the very start

e.g.
A stage1 installation can only be performed when you have a working Internet connection.
based on the above quote i reserve the right to be confused by this kind of statement - if you read all of the documentation it becomes clear that this isn't true but as the first part of explianing the process seems key maybe this could be sorted out?

i appreciate the arguement that you should read all of the documentation before beginning anyway (but where do you draw the line?) but is it realisitic to expect everyone to realize the necessity of this?

I would recommend reading the gemtoo handbook. That should be enough for the start. And if you cannot follow the installation guide for some reason, than as well the alternativ installation guide.
When I first found artikles abaout gentoo in the web, one of the first things that were made clear is, that gentoo is anything else but easy to install and that you need reading the docu - wich is the best docu for avery distro I ever worked with.
And people who don't read the docu and ask in the forum, they will be advised - hopefully in a gentle way - to do it.
So I'm goning back to work now, good luck for you.

ok - yes or no answer here

can i install the main system straight off of cd? cos i see all the source tarballs in distfiles on the cd? what are these for if not to be used to install apps without connecting to the internet? presumably they are the sources associated with the portage snapshot the cd includes?

so with the cd i can set up the system as described up to the end of the setup handbook?

then i emerge my packages over the internet? can i build from source locally as well?
