What i want:
i only have a 56k modem which i cannot be connect to the internet on for long periods of time. i would ideally like to do a stage 2 install. i can download isos and large sets of packages at university in a very short time.
my questions:
1. can i do a stage1 install from the latest uni iso without being connected to the internet for long periods? if not what prevents this?
2. can i do a stage2 install from the latest uni iso and by downloading the correct stage without being connected to the internet for long periods?
3. if i do a stage 3 install what actually is installed with the described standard optimisations? how is this different from GRP package installation
4. if i don't intend to actually change any of the optimisation settings myself is there still a benefit of stage 1 install over stage 3? i assume a stage 1 will "auto detect" a certain level of optimisation requirements???
5. if i do not want to compile kde or gnome at the initial install point, what is necessary to compile them later, again avoiding long download periods and preferably from local source? is it easy to use GRP packages in the mean time and then replace them?
i understand some of the answers to these questions will depend on what i decide to do but please try to address them seperately so i understand the basics and then we can discuss further
