Hello all,
Now I was searching the internet for a very long time without finding the appropriate solution. As many others I can hear sound on my hp nc6120 notebook without any problems. I can also play multiple songs at the same time without any problems.
Now I would like to use Skype. So I bought a headset and plugged it into my computer and unmuted (amixer -q sset 'Mic',0 100% unmute cap) the microphone.
Now I can hear what I'm talking on my headphones or the speaker (depending if the headphones are plugged in or not)
So I tried using Skype and test my audio settings using echo123. I can hear the sound in Skype. But I can't hear the text I was speaking.
Therefore I was trying arecord and audacity to capture something from the mic but without any success. The microphone doesn't seem to capture anything.
lspci and lspci -n gives me the following output:

I have a 2.6.16-r7 gentoo kernel running with almost all the drivers I need compiled statically into the kernel.
As my default WM i use fluxbox.
As I already mentioned I can hear sound, but I can't talk to anyone using skype nor record my voice using arecord or audacity. Has anyone an idea what can be wrong? Any help would be appreciated. _________________ Cheers,

Now I just found the solution.
Using alsamixer I played around with the capture devices and switched from one capture device to another one.
Initially I only had Mic enabled as capture device. Now I have enabled Capture on a channel called Capture. Since then it works. I can record using audacity and also I can use Skype.
So the problem is solved for me now.
Sleeping a little and then again try to solve a problem often helps a lot. _________________ Cheers,

Hi,
I seem to have just about the same problem. I can play sound files using aplay, but when I record a file using arecord I don't hear anything.
How did you switch the capture device? |

I used alsamixer to change the settings.
If you start alsamixer you can use <tab> to switch between playback, capture and all devices. Go to the capture devices. Then you can use left and right arrow keys to select your capture device. Once you've selected your device you can use the space button to toggle capture on or off.
In my case I had to do the following:
# alsamixer
<tab>
--> (6x to select Capture)
<space>
I hope this helps. Otherwise don't hesitate to contact me again. _________________ Cheers,

All works fine now. Thanks. |
