hi everyone, i got some weird problem with amarok today. i run it as usual but heard no music, and the OSD was popping each 3 secs. so i looked into the main window, and saw that it tries to play next songs but nothing happens. i checked everything and don't know what is wrong. i reemerged it and it didn't help. sound works ok in other apps (xmms, mplayer). please help, it's so weird;]

I often have that problem when my backends aren't working. (amarok itself does not play back files; instead it hands them off to a backend like xine or gstreamer or helix.) Go to Settings -> Configure amarok -> engine and make sure your settings are in order there. _________________ Draft Windows-to-Linux Guide |

well i did it many times;]
now it behaves in the other way, because there's no pop up in the bottom saying that there is no module selected.
in my case, there is no such pop up
it have to be something else;/ |

Did you do some upgrade before the problem started? Why you not provide more infos, like what amarok version, what engine and so. What about ogg or other files, did they play?
My guess, make sure, xine-lib is emerged with mad USE flag. |

My guess (i don't know the exact reason) would be the legal issues connected to mp3 these days (e.g. Suse is not including support for mp3 automatically any more, you have to install the necessery things yourself...) |

I must be stupid, but which flag are you talking about? What's the solution? |

I had the same problem recently and found this thread. The solution they are describing (to be performed as root or via sudo):
1) Edit your make configuration file.
Code: | nano -w /etc/make.conf |
2) Add mad to your USE flags:
Code: | USE="kde alsa (...) mad" |
2.1) You may also want to consider adding other items to the use flags as well; get a list of xine-lib's supported formats by running emerge xine-lib with verbose preview:
Code: | emerge -pv xine-lib |
... I added theora and vorbis to the USE list since these were not going to be used, either; you may also want to add flac support if you listen to flac files and it isn't already listed in red.
3) Save the file and exit nano, then re-emerge xine-lib to incorporate the new flags:
4) Restart amarok, then test playback to ensure it works (you do not need to re-emerge amarok). If you still can't hear anything, try playing back audio by some other means -- such as mplayer, or starting KDE (assuming you have not disabled startup sounds). If you still can't hear anything, the problem might be something else -- If mplayer doesn't error out without playing, the first place I'd look is alsamixer for low/muted channels.
This fix worked for me as well. I can imagine this is going to be a pretty common problem judging from several other threads of the same nature.
Admins: perhaps consider a sticky before the problem becomes more widespread? Or is this only going to affect a small group of users? |

Thank you for the great explanation! Before your post I was searching for an 'mp3' use flag... |
