After I accidently unplugged my iPod while it was still mounted, the complete filesystem was b0rked. So I reformatted and now I'm stuck with an empty iPod. But none of the Linux programs I've tried for iPod's recognize it as an ipod now, not the ipod KIO-slave, not 'yam', not amaroK.

Is there any way to initialize the iPod so I can add songs to it again without using iTunes on Windows?

Not that i know of... You need to find yourself a pc or mac with itunes i'm afraid. The thing is I don't think you can just reformat them you need to put some library files on there or something first i think to make amarok recognise the drive as an ipod.

maybe it's too late, but at least for the future, you can always try ipod linux - http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page
the only problem i've found with it is that the playback is pretty poor:(

gtkpod has an option to create the required files and directories. If it's not too late, you might try that.
