I've got a brand new 20Gb Ipod coming inthe mail tomorrow, and before I go and format it, I'd like to ask Gentooers which option do you think is the best. I don't really have access to any micro$oft boxes, my girlfriend has an OSX Mac, and all of the 5 computers I own are running Gentoo ;-)

[EDIT: see below for my final choice of HFS+ and how I got it running!]

Should I:

1) Format the Ipod for windoze with some random PC somewhere (if I can find someone who still runs that crap!) and use GTKpod or GNUpod? GTKpod mentions that it is only tested with FAT-formatted Ipods, BTW, but that probably doesn't mean that HFS Ipods don't work at all. I hope... Does this option also mean I must install a windoze version of ITunes on it?

2) Format the Ipod for Mac and hope that GTKpod can handle HFS? My kernel is configured for HFS and HFS+, BTW.

3) Install Linux on the Ipod, ditching all the ITunes stuff? I'm not sure that OSX ITunes can still communicate with a Linux Ipod, however. Anybody gone to this extreme?

Thanks much for any opinions on the subject!

well, I own an ipod and my gf has an osx imac.

Tbh the integration of ipod with osx and itunes is so perfect that I just can't be arsed to plug it into my gentoo box xD

though, it should work with hfs+ formated ipod, hfs+ in kernel and gtkpod I guess :)

the best way is with fat32 + gtkpod on linux

the hfs support is the kernel is apparently a tad "sketchy"

Couple more questions then:

1) Can I format it fat32 in Linux?
2) If I do so, I assume that I can't connect it to any OSX machines then, right?
3) On OSX, would you format it HFS or HFS+? I've seen lots of people using dual boot Linux PPC/OSX machines, so HFS support can't be *that* bad or else they would have no way of sharing partitions! What exactly do you mean by "sketchy", and can you point to any docs or posts which support that?

Yeah.

As long as you can mount the iPod, GTKPod should work with it.

i believe part of the docs on the gtkpod web site at one point stated that hfs was unstable however, that may have changed by now.

[Follow-Up]

In the end, I formatted my iPod on my gf's Mac, and everything's been groovey so far. It took a little while to get it up and running, especially as the iPod would mount read-only (as it has for may folks I've found in these forums).

The directions at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Using_an_iPod_With_Gentoo_Linux helped out greatly, and should be considered essential reading before continuing with this post. Please note that I am mounting the iPod via USB, using the directions provided along with the info below.

The next main thing was to get my Udev system working right in order to mount the iPod with write permissions. I "accidentally" updated to Udev a few weeks ago, and it's been giving me nothing but nasty suprises since then, but I suppose it's the future and we'll have to learn to live with it. There's a How-to in setting up Udev for those that haven't yet here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-115096.html Check the third posting down for the step-by-step!

My "ipod" entry in /etc/fstab looks like this:

Code:
/dev/ipod               /mnt/ipod       hfsplus         sync,nodev,nosuid,user,rw,noauto,umask=002       0 0

and the line I added to "/etc/udev/rules.d/10-local-udev.rules" looked like this:

Code:
BUS="scsi", SYSFS{model}="iPod            ", KERNEL="sd*", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="ipod"

I run GTKpod as root, haven't really tried as normal user as it's no big deal on my laptop. Somebody else might want to report on how their permissions look if they do it different.

I used GNUpod to set up the directories on the iPod before loading songs with gnupod. I wasn't having any luck with gnupod for this, so try the following if you are also stuck (assuming you have write permissions, and that your iPod is mounted at /mnt/ipod, of course!):

Code:
 gnupod_INIT.pl -m /mnt/ipod

The thing that pisses me off still is that the iPod only uses ID3 tags, not directory structures, to sort the music. So if you're like me and you've downloaded a ton of music with half-assed ID3 tags, you'll never be able to find it once you've put it on your iPod unless you make a seperate playlist for each album that has dodgy ID3 tags. (Unless you can tell the difference between "Unknown Artist - Unknown Album - Unknown Track - 04" and "unknown_artist-uknown_album-unknown_track-07") ;-)

Any suggestions of scripts which can take a folder full of badly tagged MP3s and give them rudimentary ID3 info from the directory name are more than welcome!

Good luck!
