Really... mmm, so I have to wait a bit for that. Seems strange though, are the differences for my board so great that Linux won't even boot?

mm-sources and rtl8187

Hi all,

I upgraded my system since my last visits to this forum and I had a couple of problems with it;

- Asus P5W DH Deluxe
- e6600 core2duo at 3.2 ghz
- 1 gb. Corsair pc5400
- 2 S-ATA Samsung spinpoints

No livecd of Gentoo, nor Ubuntu or Fedora booted, they all froze immediately after ...

Well, probably, but my 2006.1 livecd or even the latest stable kernel won't boot after the first microsecond it starts with booting, it just freezes the entire system with a black screen. Same problem for Ubuntu and Fedora, didn't try other distro's. Got a running Gentoo now by using the latest mm ...

Very much so indeed. Although I've had my share of problems with Gentoo as well, it is still my choice of distro.
When I tried some of the others, I got the feeling of a better running system, but less control over it. Perhaps not justified, but Gentoo simply expects you to have some knowledge about ...

All solved now, xfce4.4 up and running. Really nice I must say, the final reason to abandon Windows in every day work.

My problems were all related to compiling against older libraries and stuff. Which makes me wonder, why aren't files replaced during a recompilation, would've saved me quite some ...

Ok, manually starting xfwm4 worked. I saw a failure with starting the mcs-manager. Same one as I had before with other packages, so probably I didn't remove all components of xfce4.2 mcs properly yet. I'll do that and recompile.

I was wondering though, why xfwm4 didn't start automatically...

XFCE4.4 - xfwm problem? [solved]

Hi guys and girlz,

Here I am again. Mr. tweaker. :)

Installed xfce4.4 succesfully now, however I seem to have a problem with the xfwm. At least I think, because I don't see any moveable windows, programs just startup on the desktop, no window around, and I have a cross as a mouse pointer. Also, no ...

Hi there,

Fixed it! Problem was that I had xfce 4.2 still scattered around on the system, and I didn't emerge enough packages as well. :) Ah well, beta-testing eh.

XFCE4.4 - startup problem [solved]

Hi guys and girlz,

Thanks for the help on the previous problem. The compilation of xfce4.4 beta2 worked. Now I have the following error message when trying to startxfce4:

"Xfce4-session error while loading shared libraries libxfce4mcs-client-so.2; cannot open shared
object file no such file or ...

I like your style. :D Brains AND humor, good combination when you're tweaking.

It seems I didn't have all the packages needed to make it run. Portage is compiling quite a few more, hope xfce isn't growing too much.
I'm guessing the problem will be solved soon.

Cheerz, Vincent

Ok ok, got your point  I'm a bit of a tweaker.

On the other hand, it is in portage, masked or not. So, should probably at least compile I guess. I am going to try to built it using the normal portage tree, since that's much cleaner anyway and I like to have a clean system. Perhaps there's ...

Mmm, yes perhaps, though I'm not sure this is a bug. I mean, it didn't fail with other people. I did log-in to my normal account, typed 'su' and started the process. Perhaps that's also a wrong way of introducing new programs to the environment..

And xfce and gentoo seem logical, since ppl using ...

It's probably hardmasked, if it's there at all. I downloaded the sources myself and the first part of the compilation process, up till the panel, worked just fine. So it's not something with portage I think. It's more some environment variable I guess. Though I did set the adviced one on the xfce ...

XFCE 4.4-undefined reference to xfce_textdomain (solved)

Hi all,

Anyone who knows what's going on overhere? Came up when I tried to compile the panel of xcfe 4.4, now I'm stuck there;

/lib/modules points to wrong kernel

Hi there!

Got quite a few problems with my new kernel, but for a start I now saw my new kernel was trying to load a module from my previous installation.
Modprobing doesn't work because of an invalid format. But I noticed /lib/modules/old kernel. So how to solve this? Can't find a symlink
anywhere ...
