High CPU load w/ Apache2...

So I recently upgraded PHP and my CPU load averages jumped from 5-10 (already extremely high) to mid twenties. I was hoping to get some suggestions on apache optimizations to bring down my usage times... what do you guys think?

I have mod_fastcgi & mod_php5 installed, I'm pretty sure apache is ...

should swap be raid0?

I noticed in this howto: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_Install_on_Software_RAID that they're creating raid0 swap on a system that's otherwise raid1:
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md2 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2

I would think that striping swap would create an unnecessary ...

I suspect the source of the problem might be that the drives are operating at 3.0Gb/s. As soon as I find a jumper to limit them to 1.5Gb/s I'll update...

Does anyone know how to enable support for SATA II on gentoo? my forum searches haven't turned anything up...

I'll propose a number of dumb ideas, sometimes simplicity resolves:
1. Make sure the folders you claim to have deleted gigabytes of data from are REALLY on hdd1 and not some symlinks to other drive(s).
2. I assume you have an FTP server running on this machine (hint: /var/ftp) ? Could somebody be ...

Yah, tried that several times, fsck.ext3 was a no go:

fsck.ext3 -fn didn't work. Neither did a reboot :) Although the amount used did change (see below).

However Used + Avail still doesn't equal size.

Any other ideas? I'm stumped.

/dev/hdd1 is mounted on /var/ftp.

$lsof | grep "/var/ftp" returns nothing.

I haven't bothered with X because it's a server, and I only ssh into it. I didn't want to break anything by trying to upgrade it.

It looks like firelight isn't in portage .

Regardless, according to the README it requires kdelibs. To install that, I would need to emerge 20 dependences and resolve 2 blocks. Not ideal :(

Any other ideas? How safe would it be for me to emerge kdelibs?

I just don't get it though.

I can unmount the drive, which would indicate there aren't any processes writing to it.

When I delete more files on the drive, the space doesn't appear as available.

Before deleting 9GB of data:

Frostschutz,

Thanks for your feedback, that's really helpful. However I don't think any of those suggestions are the solution

The drive is a secondary device, so there's no system files (or root reserve) on it.

The files deleted were media files (movies, emails, etc). There's no way I only ...

Disappearing disk space?

I ran out of space on one of my drives, so I removed some files. However, that didn't seem to free up any space:

After deleting 12 gigs of data:

Code: Select all

$df -h --sync
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdd1             230G  217G  662M 100% /var/ftp
Any ideas?

Well, I pulled out the drive on SATA 1 - and I guess I picked correctly!

So it sounds like the [0] and [1] refer to the drive connection letters in /proc/mdstat. They also seem to correspond to the RaidDevice number in mdadm --detail /dev/mdX

Testing degraded RAID 1 device without downtime

Two of my server's partitions (md1 & md3) have degraded arrays. Since both of the degraded arrays are on the same drive (/dev/sdb), I'd like to test the drive for an actual physical failure before I add it back into the array.

Does anyone know of any good drive-level testing software that can be ...

adding 8139too to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

I have two ethernet adapters, eth0 and eth1.

Without 8139too, eth0 works fine, initializing on startup. However, eth1 will not start:
# /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start
* Starting eth1
* Bringing up eth1
* dhcp
* eth1 does not exist

After I load 8139too, eth1 starts fine:

# modprobe 8139too ...

Think4UrS11, thanks for your help. You're right, the route -n and /etc/conf.d/net didn't match. While troubleshooting I switched the config of eth0 and eth1, forgetting to update the output of route -n. Anyways, I've fixed it in the original post.

I've diagnosed my problem to the following, but I can't figure out how to fix it. I'm sure it's pretty simple:

kernel hangs when I enable support for Intel SATA [solved]

Weird problem, kernel hangs at boot when I compile in support (using genkernel) for the intel SATA drivers:
Device Drivers ---> SCSI device support ---> SCSI low-level drivers ---> Intel PIIX/ICH SATA support

However, when I don't have support for the intel drivers, then MD doesn't detect my raid ...
