I think its more a matter of personal opinion. Browse through the fora, you'll find enough threads of KDE vs. Gnome, highlighting each DE's pro's and con's.

A general question: This Guide uses a minimalist setting of the USE variable. You are free to add additional USE flags as needed for your specific system requirements, but it is recommended that you do not add them to /etc/make.conf until after you have completed the entire installation.
Would that ...

Hey

you should read the manual about this. If you want a stage 3 installation, download the Maximal LiveCD.
If you want to install gentoo using stage 1 or 2 however, the minimal will suffice.

I'd recommend reading through thi topic of the manual first. If you have any more questions, I'll be glad ...

That shouldn't be much of a problem, you'll probbly just have a more recent version of grub.

When grub loads and you go into config mode, which drives does it detect?

It seems you have mutiple HDs then? Change the order in which they boot in your BIOS, setting your gentoo disk first.

On one of my computers, the liveCD recognized my sATA disk as /dev/sda1. However, when finishing the installation and wanting to boot into my new system, I got a similar error. Looking at the grub console I found out sda1 had become -strangely enough- hde4!. Maybe you want to explore that a bit?

Could you give the layout of your disk (partitions etc), as well as your grub config file?

You got the wireless tools installed as well?
I think the drivers of ipw 2100 are also on portage, so maybe get them that way, in case you did something wrong.

Doesn't that have to do with the fact that the 'monolithical' kde packages were split into over 300 separate emerges?
If so, check http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml !

1.4.2_01 is a more recent version than 1.4.2, though the difference between these two will be minimal.

The difference between the JDK and the JRE is as following:
JRE: Java RunTime Environment - you need this to use Java applications. Otherwise they won't run
JDK: Java Development Kit - you need ...

Openbox questions

I've some small issues with my Openbox WM, hopefully you guys can help me :)
- when selecting themes, only the Openbox menu changes. When starting e.g. Firefox, it has its usual dull theme. Anything can be done about this?
- how does one start extra applications on starting Openbox? I'm thinking ...
