[X] Getting Monitor Hor. & Ver. Freq.

  • Quote

Post by Ansur » Thu Dec 09, 2004 8:27 pm

I need to know what Horizontal and Vertical Frequency my laptop (Acer 4001WLMi) can handle.
The manual doesn't specify these things, so I looked at the Gentoo docs, in where I found "ddcxinfo-knoppix"
However, this programme doens't give me values for 1280*800 (it's a 15.4" monitor).

Any other methods I can use ?

That is how I always find those values.

What Google told me so far is values and such for ace laptops OTHER than my laptop, thus sofar it wasn't helpful.

Leave them out. You do not need to specify them for LCD screens.

If that does not work (you do have an unusual resolution), read the X logs to figure the frequency and then use a modeline generator to create a modeline for your resolution and frequency values.

And how do you leave them out?
When generating the file using the config-script, I can't skip that section.

Use nano/emacs/vi/<your favorite text editor> to remove those lines. And get used to using a text editor if you plan to use Gentoo for any significant period of time. :)

In case the above was not clear, go ahead and put some bogus values in when asked by config script. Then edit the generated file, specifically the Monitor section.

This is just what I had to do with my wide screen laptop. You should know what the screens native resolution is from the packaging if nothing else. Just use conservitive numbers with a generator and you should be fine.

Here is the modeline generator I use:

Did that, though it doesn't seem to work properly. Keep on trying I guess!

you don't need Hsync and Vsync value for an LCD screen. If you have unusual screen resolution(I have 1280x800), you need a modeline in your xorg.conf goto http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/
