Theme installation issues

  • Quote

Post by Zandy1123 » Thu Dec 09, 2004 10:53 pm

I'm trying to install a handful of themes.

My first issue was this:

I went into Applications - Desktop Prefs - Themes and installed the panther-gtk tar.gz file. HOWEVER, the theme did not appear in the list. I then clicked on the "Theme Details" button and I found the panther theme under the "Controls" tab. I clicked it - it looked fine and I saved the theme, which then appeared in the Themes list.

Second issue: the panther-gtk theme is complete with icons and everything. However, when I go into "Theme Details," panther doesn't show up under the "Window Border" or "Icons" lists.

Any ideas why not?

Similarly, I tried to install the Noia icon theme, but it doesn't appear in the "Icons" list either.

Help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Andrew

I assume you are using Gnome as WM?

yes - I'm using Gnome

I was able to manually install the icon themes into /usr/share/icons

That worked fine.

But the panther-gtk2 theme is still being strange. Everything is bundled into a single tar.gz file....only the controls appear...still no icons or window borders

I'm not an expert on this subject, but shouldn't you untar that file?

Actually, the help files for installing themes states that the file should remain untarred...

Again, I was able install parts of the file manually by untarring it and placing the files in the /usr/share/themes folder.

I've given up on getting all of the parts of the panther theme to install properly.

I too am no expert but in the past I have just copied the dirs when making a new account. The theme app just unzips the theme file you send it and puts it in ~/.themes. In the case of icons there is a ~/.icons dir but everything seems to get put in /usr/share/icons where it is readable by all users.

yeah...I'm getting into the habit of putting everything in the /usr/share/icons and themes folders to allow universal access. When an individual user customizes a theme and saves it, it gets stored in that user's themes folder and does not affect the shared themes.

I'm a total Linux n00b (obviously) - just installed Gentoo a few days ago. So far, I love it...I need to clear out some more real estate in my brain to accommodate all this new Linux info.
