No thanks. I use a Gentoo bootsplash theme because I like it, and it seems right to have distro boot branding (as with Ubuntu), but anything else irritates the hell out of me. I don't like the Gentoo GNOME splash screen, I wouldn't like Gentoo icons, and a Gentoo theme? Urgh. The same goes for my ...

nVidia have said that there will be a new version of their drivers with the necessary extension - this will also make Xgl work much better, actually :-)

Hopefully they won't take too long to produce that.

Hmm, first thought: it's detecting a different mimetype. My AACs were all encoded with iTunes on my Powerbook (before I switched to a Linux laptop) and come up as audio/x-m4a. Yours is detecting as audio/x-alac, which now implies to me that you need yet another plugin that we haven't identified ...

My mistake; there appears to be no such ebuild. Emerging media-libs/gst-plugins-bad will get you qtdemux though.

This is actually fixed, I forgot to update on here. The trick in my case was to ensure I had gst-plugins-qtdemux - with that, everything worked swimmingly. The command line, by the way, was with an actual playbin element. Something like:

gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///home/matthew/Music ...

Well I really should have come back and updated this because I fixed it... I figured out how to disable frequency scaling at the appropriate time, and now the only thing that mucks it up is if you unplug the mains while it's suspending, in which case it won't resume on battery. Odd, but there you go ...

I'm getting a similar problem, and it seems to have been triggered by an upgrade of some part of GStreamer 0.10, as it used to work fine. 0.8 plays them fine, but 0.10 suddenly decided not to, and no combination of re-merging or downgrading things that I've tried yet has had any impact.

Which is a ...

[SOLVED] Inspiron 630m won't wake from sleep on battery

I have a nice shiny new Dell Inspiron 630m. With the help of the guide at disgruntledgoat.com I've got Gentoo mostly working on it. The real problem is with sleep (hibernate to ram). It works fine if I'm plugged into the mains. It works fine if I sleep on battery and wake while plugged in.

It does ...

I've got it working! Using Pijau's overlay I can get Xgl started and compiz running. For reference:

amd64
Geforce 6800GS (AGP)
nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r3
nvidia-glx-1.0.8178

However, compiz does like to freeze up from time to time, and of course I have the problem with the missing OpenGL extension ...

With Hanno's latest overlay (200602101), Xgl fails during configure, saying that it can't find depthstencil.c inside the Mesa tree. I checked this out, and symlink-mesa.sh is what wants it and can't find it (quite rightly, it isn't there). Unfortunately it seems that Xgl's makefile will be using it ...

Oh no, that wasn't it at all, it was just mounting the disk in my first CD drive and hoping it was the LiveCD, when in fact the LiveCD was in my second CD drive. Removing the disk in the first drive caused it to boot much more plausibly, and the USB keyboard is now working.

I got tipped off to the ...

I'm getting this; it appears that the minimal LiveCD doesn't contain the hid module, which is needed to get USB keyboards up and running. Very irritating!

The thing that leads me to believe this is that the bootup messages I can see show that it looked for the hid module but couldn't find it. I ...

Here a message that was on screen (and that you ignored):

For gtk themes to work correctly after an update, you might have to rebuild your theme engines.
Executing 'qpkg -f -nc /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.2.0/engines | xargs emerge' should do the trick if
you upgrade from gtk+-2.2 to 2.4 (requires ...

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to how you got vesafb to work at a decent resolution... whenever I try it, I get a totally black screen. That's with 2.6, a Radeon 9800 Pro and a 17" LCD plugged into the DVI port.

No, it was a much simpler patch than that. Unfortunately I've lost the URL... the patch was by the same person though, so I suspect what you've found is a newer variant, especially given the reference to -mm3.

The one I did was only one hunk, so it was easy to do by hand.

I found a patch which I was able to manually apply to 2.6.1-gentoo, which has sorted things out in X, but the console's still mucked up. I'll try mm sources another day I think.

What DID they do to the keyboard map in 2.6???

Kernel 2.6 + USB Keyboard

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I've not found it anywhere by searching.

Now I wonder if I could hack together something for gDesklets which lets me use it as I wish GNOME's wallpaper settings could be used, to scatter several images smaller than the screen across the desktop in arbitrary places. I guess it'd only be a matter of writing some sort of image-loading sensor ...
