I can't type anything...

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

I can't type anything...

This is what I have:

ASRock K8S8X
A64 3200+
Corsair PC-3200

When I boot up, I can hit F2 to go into BIOS. When the
Minimal A64 Gentoo LiveCD (2004.2) boots, I can enter boot
options.

But after that, my keyboard stops working. It goes into the
Gentoo screen, but I can't type anything whatsoever. It's weird
because Num Lock is active on the keyboard, although I can't
disable it by hitting the Num Lock key, nor can I enable other
things like Caps Lock. And of course, none of the other keys
work either.

I thought that it might be a USB problem.

The USB options in my BIOS are:

Onboard USB - Enabled
USB2 Support - Enabled
USB Legacy Mode - Enabled

(When I didn't have USB Legacy Mode on, I couldn't even enter
boot options).

I tried fiddling around with these options, but to no avail.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

You can maybe try to plug your keyboard into a ps/2 connector (if you have a converter).
Real programmers don't document. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

Unfortunately, I do not have a USB/PS2 converter. If all else
fails, then I might have to go get one.

I've tried both 2.4 and 2.6 (via smp). The same thing happens
with both kernels.

I'm getting this; it appears that the minimal LiveCD doesn't contain the hid module, which is needed to get USB keyboards up and running. Very irritating!

The thing that leads me to believe this is that the bootup messages I can see show that it looked for the hid module but couldn't find it. I assume that means it's not on the CD, but I'm about to try with a PS/2 keyboard nicked from my parents' computer, so we shall see.

Oh no, that wasn't it at all, it was just mounting the disk in my first CD drive and hoping it was the LiveCD, when in fact the LiveCD was in my second CD drive. Removing the disk in the first drive caused it to boot much more plausibly, and the USB keyboard is now working.

I got tipped off to the boot not being right when /sbin/ifconfig didn't exist...
