to put that simply, wine is a command in the shell now.
just try typing 'wine' to see the options. but to run a .exe you need to type 'wine' than the location of the .exe this is a fairly simple command and i doubt you will have any more trouble with it.[/code]

woah fork off a distro or build your own, that is going to be some work. i know of a linux from scratch for building your very own distro. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org try that out if you really want to. never have tried it, but thought about after my stint with RedHat fedora.

i would probably be able to help you. i have installed with VMware with a number of distros. first of all why did you make the drive so large to start. you can always add more space later. i started with 4 gb and only less than 3 are taken up. have you installed using VMware with a 20gb virtual ...

no this isn't a smart move at all. you dont have enough hard drive space. 800mb wont do the cut if you are looking for a desktop enviroment. if you just want to use the shell... then i still dont think there is enough space. but i agree... even if there is enough space. your specs are not fit for ...

no there is only a liveCD for the x86 arch. there is not one for classes like pentium4. These sub-directory's isos are package isos. package iso is not bootable. this is a very common error.

I found his mistake in another forum. xfsprogs is not in anyway related to ext2/ext3. XFS is its own filesystem and should probably not be used by most home computers. XFS is for fibre and high-end scsi drives.

okay so i do not have to do anything. is it all right to have grub install in the MBR and is my partition table okay?

/dev/hda1 ntfs 40gb (windows XP)
/dev/hdb1 boot 32mb (boot)
/dev/hdb2 swap 1gb (swap)
/dev/hdb3 ext3 60gb (linux)
/dev/hdb4 fat32 all left over (shared) about 19gb

i am in knoppix right now. i think it makes sense that my partition table should be something like this

/dev/hda1 ntfs 40gb minus space of /boot (windows XP)
/dev/hda2 ext2 boot (boot)
/dev/hdb1 swap 1gb (swap)
/dev/hdb2 ext3 60gb (linux)
/dev/hdb3 fat32 19gb (shared)

forgot how big the boot ...

Well if i just have straight dhcp network can i boot from liveCD andinstall and use linux-ntfs? that would be great. Also on GRUB, I need to move my NTFS back a few sectors to make room for the /boot partition for grub, don't i?

my other option is to leave my new hd like it is and put a new ...

i wish it was that simple. i already tried logging as root, it didn't help. It is saying my root is read only. when i type mount it comes back saying /dev/root on / type ext3 (ro, noatime)
when i go to write using nano, it says read-only file system which is directly related to this. any other ...

you need

kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.3 root=/dev/hda3

assuming you didnt use genkernel

check this quote out too

I promise you that this will produce a "bootable" kernel for you assuming all other things are in order. As for Grub...just follow the handbook to the letter and you will be fine. Do ...
