Gentoo/ p100, 24Mb, 800Mb HD - cdrom - ethernet; How?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Actually, I have Debian installed on my AST J30 laptop, the specifics of which are listed above (the - sign means no). I could do almost everything I had the need for with it (e.g. X, ssh, emacs, latex, irda): however, the sound card (reported as sb16) never worked.

I'll be glad to try Gentoo, not only for sound reasons. - The only thing I can do is to copy both stage# and portage from zip-iomega to the HD.

Thank you a lot for any suggestion.

i've never had to do it before, but you can boot off a floppy into a working linux environment. From there, the directions in the install guide would be about the same (but no auto-detect of things). I'm sure there is plenty of documentation on booting from a floppy or maybe someone that has more experience can help.
On a side note, do you realize how long it's going to take to comile packages on that laptop? You can do whatever you want of course, but definately consider the amount of time it is going take

Thanks: I tried the Gentoo Linux Boot Floppy which I found at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=85629;
this freeze, I guess because of low-mem.

Then, I booted with tomsrtbt, which is fine, although it has no reiserfs-support. Then, I do not know how to progress the install of stage (say, 3 - because of your note) and portage (already copied on a HD-partition).

no this isn't a smart move at all. you dont have enough hard drive space. 800mb wont do the cut if you are looking for a desktop enviroment. if you just want to use the shell... then i still dont think there is enough space. but i agree... even if there is enough space. your specs are not fit for compiling anything.
