Start-up problem

I am getting an error when I go to startup. I know how to fix it. My fstab is not correct. When I go to change it in nano, it wont let me save it. It says read only file system. I did a stage2 install. Why won't it let me save the new fstab?

It sounds like you need to reboot using the livecd and then mount your root filesystem and you can then edit your fstab file.

shouldn't i just be able to reboot with the livecd in and it will run from that rather than grub?

Well, you can't edit the /etc/fstab because you don't have "permission" to edit it. Type "su -" and enter your root password. Then try and edit it.

i wish it was that simple. i already tried logging as root, it didn't help. It is saying my root is read only. when i type mount it comes back saying

Code: Select all

/dev/root on / type ext3 (ro, noatime)
when i go to write using nano, it says read-only file system which is directly related to this. any other suggestions on how to fix this?

When you log on with the live CD are you chrooting into the Gentoo environment and Mounting Gentoo and proc?

From Live CD:

mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
nano -w /etc/fstab

From here it should let you write to it I believe. From a CD prompt gentoo is perceiving you as an "outsider" maybe and isn't giving you permissions.

okay it is solved. i had to change the boot order in my cmos. VMware doesn't boot from CD before Hard-drive. Once I got to LiveCD i was fine.
