I played around with different terminal emulators/shells etc, and it seems that exactly those processes/applications become sluggish/freeze periodically/only process input sporadically, which are parents of the process that initially causes/exhibits the hangs. ...

For example, starting uxterm from ...

Lags/freezes/hangs, Intel Raptor Lake/XE graphics?

Certain workloads cause hangs of parts of my desktop, as best as I can describe:

First, I encountered this around xfreerdp: https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/issues/12535

Where, when running more than one instance of xfreerdp, the new instance would hang with an all black window immediately on ...

KDE Network Manager tray icon not showing signal strength

This is a bit of a "first world problem", but it's been like that for me for a loong while now, so I'm wondering what's going on.

When connected to Wi-Fi, the KDE system icon (of Network Manager, I presume) still shows what I take to be the "unknown Wi-Fi" symbol - all bars grayed out, and a red ...

Re: sys-kernel/gentoo-sources stabilization?

[quote]Do you know how to get 6.12.58?[/lquote]

I know how to unmask those. The thing about gentoo only stabilizing LTS I was not aware of.

See https://postimg.cc/v1RRVfwL , I count 54 versions below 6.12.41, 17 of those within 6.12. This is a drastic difference from the "gaps between stable ...

sys-kernel/gentoo-sources stabilization?

As of right now, I see 54 newer gentoo-sources versions than the currently stable 6.12.41 on amd64...

Subjectively, it seems stabilization of new gentoo-sources versions is falling behind more than I seem to remember. Looking at the ebuild history, before now the longest gap between stabilisations ...

iwlwifi/AC 3165 stopped working, not showing any APs/network

Until about two weeks ago, iwlwifi/AC 3165 worked perfectly well in my Lenovo ideapad 700-17ISK.

As part of a larger (mostly KDE) update some weeks ago, I noticed that the WiFi icon (KDE networking status icon) would show "disconnected" even when I was connected to a perfectly working WiFi. At the ...

Hmmm, so sys-apps/util-linux does provide /sbin/fdisk (et al), and:

/usr/bin/fdisk does not belong to any package?!?

As part of some (external) disk wrangling, I was using fdisk/sfdisk/gdisk/parted a lot.

The gdisk command was missing on a system upgraded from an older install, so I tried to see what package I would need.

eix gdisk - nothing.

Maybe it's a gpt USE flag of fdisk, or such?

Steam(ClientUI) sometimes turns transparent, freezes desktop

I'm running KDE (stable) using X11 on a Laptop with both Intel (HD Graphics 530 (SKL GT2)) and nVidia (GeForce GTX 950M) graphics. It's that setup where Intel does all the display, and the nVidia dGPU can render to its framebuffer (when all the stars align right).

StackRot (CVE-2023-3269) - which kernel to run?

I've become aware of the StackRot vulnerability https://github.com/lrh2000/StackRot in recent Linux kernels.

Current stable (on amd64) is gentoo-sources-6.1.31, which I very much presume does not contain a fix for CVE-2023-3269.

Is there an effort already underway to have a sufficiently newer ...

Thank you very much, alamahant!

This got me in the right direction for sure.

My system's running sys-apps/systemd, not sys-auth/elogind. Currently, in systemd it's not a configurable option (surprise, surprise...), but apparently it's been patched out in newer versions again:

get rid of broadcast to all terminals when suspending?

Since some recent updates, suspending (usually to RAM) my system from KDE/Plasma will print a wall message to any and all shells/terminals/ssh logins/... on the machine, like this:

Development workflow - keeping work directory around

While chasing after bugs / touching up issues, I regularly wish to keep an ebuild's source work directory ($workdir=/var/tmp/portage/app-category/pkgname/work) around. My (preferred) workflow loop looks roughly like this:

0. (bump ebuild)
1. ebuild /path/to/app-category/pkgname.ebuild prepare

Thank you everyone!

From what I'd read, I was under the impression that portage should be able to resolve the openexr/ilmbase thing by itself, and (wrongly) assumed it to be less of an issue than the intractable xorg conflict that it complains about first.

Turns out I had ilmbase and openexr ...

On a system that I update roughly every couple of months (it's "production" for me and I can't deal with unscheduled downtime due to breaking changes of some upgrade), emerge @world now complains about xorg-server / xorg-drivers / xf86-input-{evdev, synaptics} conflicts.

I ran into this playing Antichamber from Steam in primusrun.

On my system, there's a symbolic link /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so.1 -> ../../../libGL.so.1
I.e. it's pointing to /usr/lib64/libGL.so.1

That link probably came about using some manual fixing, I can't find a package it belongs ...

My next candidates are polkit and libproxy ...

This is the output of:

Implausibly large @system set

As I noticed during the last few upgrades, I'm experiencing an extremely large @system set; i.e. portage thinks that a lot of packages should be considered part of '@system'.

This is especially relevant since portage emerges @system packages with reduced parallelism, which greatly increases upgrade ...
