sys-kernel/gentoo-sources stabilization?

  • Quote

Post by jmbreuer » Sun Nov 23, 2025 8:25 pm

As of right now, I see 54 newer gentoo-sources versions than the currently stable 6.12.41 on amd64...

Subjectively, it seems stabilization of new gentoo-sources versions is falling behind more than I seem to remember. Looking at the ebuild history, before now the longest gap between stabilisations was 15 versions, not more than 50.

Specific reasons for that? What's holding up newer versions to get amd64 stable?

jmbreuer.

Only kernel.org LTS versions are ever stable on Gentoo.
The next LTS version should be out soon.
It may even be 6.18.

That does not mean the others will drink all the beer in your fridge.
They don't get the testing required to be marked stable.
If you can't wait, feel free to keyword gentoo-sources.
Do keep several kernels on your boot menu.

I can't see where you're getting 50 from indeed unless you include non-LTS kernels. mpagano stopped working on gentoo-sources, alicef is handling that now and may not yet be in the rhythm of filing stablereqs. You can always file one to ask about it.

Latest 6.12 is 6.12.58. Current Gentoo stable is 6.12.41 ... so we are 17 versions behind ... :(

... but @sam_ has already answered.

Do you know how to get 6.12.58?

I know how to unmask those. The thing about gentoo only stabilizing LTS I was not aware of.

See https://postimg.cc/v1RRVfwL, I count 54 versions below 6.12.41, 17 of those within 6.12. This is a drastic difference from the "gaps between stable versions" you can see above 6.12.41; which is what prompted my question.
It is/was completely unclear to me which of those would be candidates for stabilization.

I now understand any newer 6.12.x , as well as future releases, possibly 6.18.x, might get stabilized, and I might choose to run e.g. 6.12.57/58 until a newer version is officially stabilized for a "similarly stable" user experience.

I see ... but the counting is wrong ... the kernel developers almost always release with a new stable version (e.g. 6.17.7 -> 6.17.8 ) also new versions for all the LTS kernel ... and even for old stable kernels (6.16). Example:

6.17.8 was released 11 days ago. At the same time - also 11 days ago - 6.12.58 was released. AND 6.6.116 ... and other LTS kernels ... and even 6.16.11.

Fun fact: New versions were just released two hours ago. You can see it all here:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke ... /linux.git
(just klick on the version below "branch")

BTW: In the past I also used only LTS kernels (5.10; 5.15; 6.1) But then I updated to every new kernel version ... and except once (*) all have been absolutely stable. At the moment I am on 6.17.8 which is rock solid.

I poked her on a social network a few days ago, asking if she would clean up a bit gentoo-sources, to remove 6.15 6.16 and other intermediary versions, she answered "Thanks for reminding", but I guess she's been busy with something else, or maybe she'll do it when a new version will be available (or maybe it slipped out of her mind).
