Should work. If more than just the processor will change though, you may want to rebuild your kernel with the appropriate drivers before upgrading. Otherwise, you may have to boot from a liveCD/USB/etc to do it.

Sounds like you are using one of the automated installers. They rarely work. Use the handbook.

if you used genkernel or an initrd on your own, it would be a parameter passed to the kernel. So, it would be like this: where /dev/sda3 is the root device. If you dont have an initrd, it should just be root=/dev/sda3

It is saved in whatever directory you launched links in. This may have been /home/gentoo (on the liveCD, in RAM). It could have been anywhere though.

If it was in RAM, it is lost, and you will have to download it again.
