Re: Booting up with splash image ends in tty1

Try removing console=tty1 from the command-line parameters.

Let's see:

I started with Windows --> Mandrake 10 (wouldn't install) --> back to Windows --> openSuse --> Fedora Core 6 --> Gentoo --> FreeBSD (for about a week) --> back to Gentoo

Gentoo is still my favourite.

Should work. If more than just the processor will change though, you may want to rebuild your kernel with the appropriate drivers before upgrading. Otherwise, you may have to boot from a liveCD/USB/etc to do it.

Thanks ShinyThings, tatotato, cyblord, yngwin and ferg again :)
Should be ready to switch now!

Follow the handbook from the beginning, you'll get to the part where you extract the tarball. It should be something along the lines of tar xvjpf stage3-*.tar.bz2
I know how to extract it, just that I ...

Just another question xD
I found the stage 3, but theres the 2008 beta and 2007. Which one is more stable since it sounds like 2008 beta sounds good enough...
Also, what's the difference between the hardened and normal stage 3 tarballs? And if it's only ~110MB ...

Yes, you can compile everything from source. Just do a normal stage 3 installation (follow the handbook ), and then do emerge -eav system. That will recompile everything that the stage3 had prebuilt. Everything you install after extracting the stage3 tarball will be built from source by you. You can ...

Well, the second option (the x86-64 one) will give you a 64bit system. The performance increase will probably be negligible unless you are doing anything scientific or perhaps statistics-related. It also comes with a few minor software issues that you may want to avoid.

That being said, I use a ...

In Windows, you probably burned the .iso file as an .iso file and not as an image, (leaving a single .iso file on the CD) otherwise it should have booted.

In Fedora, you burned the ia64 .iso properly, but ia64 will not work unless you have an itanium processor (which I guarantee you do not).

Do ...

Sounds like you are using one of the automated installers. They rarely work. Use the handbook.

If you need networkless, there is also a networkless installation handbook.

I'm assuming that you're using the Live discs instead of the minimal installer. Most likely the problem is that the kernel on the live discs is too old to support a piece of your hardware. I would highly discourage you from using the GTK+ installer anyway. Using the CLI installer really allows you ...

As for the big 32/64 question: Go 64-bit. The only little issue I have is flash, and even that (mostly) works.

What does this "(mostly)" supposed to mean?

It works flawlessly if you use a 32bit web browser (mozilla-firefox-bin for example). If you use a 64bit nsplugin-compatible browser you ...

You can install those tools through portage. Just do emerge links to install links, emerge vim to install vim, etc.

You may want to make use of the -a and -v flags. -v gives verbose output and -a will show what actions will be carried out and ask if you want to proceed. So then it would be emerge ...

I just have this in my .xinitrc:

To stop xfwm4 from starting, comment out these (or similar) lines in /etc/xdg ...

You will also have to install X11 to get the graphical interface. Check out this guide

Then, to get a similar GUI as on the liveCD, you will need to install GNOME and gdm. I couldn't help you with this, but it should be fairly straightforward, along the lines of emerge gnome gdm.

if you used genkernel or an initrd on your own, it would be a parameter passed to the kernel. So, it would be like this:

Code: Select all

kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=initrd real_root=/dev/sda3
where /dev/sda3 is the root device. If you dont have an initrd, it should just be root=/dev/sda3

It is saved in whatever directory you launched links in. This may have been /home/gentoo (on the liveCD, in RAM). It could have been anywhere though.

If it was in RAM, it is lost, and you will have to download it again.
