I didn't have as much trouble with JMicron as everybody else did. I set my devices to AHCI in my BIOS, and booted with 'gentoo all-generic-ide' and everything came out pretty good. My HDD is /dev/sda which makes sense, and my DVD drive is fine..

I like your setup though. I've got a C2D and it's an ...

Do it. Most people will recommend an "easy" distro to start out, and learn your way around the system, but all you'll learn doing that is what you could learn with 20 min. on Windoze (seriously). You could try an "easy" distro like Ubuntu (I did) or Mandriva, not that either are bad, but when ...

Well, I can't emerge Thunar or Terminal, because of the package '<xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.4'. Notice the '<' in front of the package. WTF? I can't unmerge it when I type the name with the '<", and I can't unmerge it without it. How am I supposed to get rid of that stupid package, if I can't unmerge ...

Hal and Coldplug

Well, I used genkernel for compiling my kernel, and like the docs. said, emerged coldplug. Now, I have an up-and-running Xfce4 box, and I need some things gone. Mainly xffm (OMG why does it suck so bad) and xterm (in favor of xfce-extra/terminal). I'm having some problems with that. When I try to ...

Well, I put it on a floppy, copied it to my / folder, extracted and installed. I had it replace my old driver and the install went fine, no errors. I then did 'modprobe sk98lin' and it seemed to be fine, but I still can't emerge anything. Whenever I try to emerge something (emerge --sync, emerge ...

I have a question about all of this. I have the revision 22 Marvell NIC (Don't have the exact specs, I'm on Windows as it's the only OS I have that can access the internet) on the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 mobo. During the installer, I would frequently need to exit out of the chroot environment and run ...

Probably.

That was blunt .

Thank you very much, your config. worked perfectly. About this IDE and SATA deal... What exactly do you mean? I tried booting Gentoo, and it said it didn't have a root device. Is that what you meant? To boot the minimal installer CD I went into my BIOS and changed ...

Install finished, new problem

I just finished my install, rebooted, and when GRUB loaded, it loaded with a bunch of weird while lines running down it. I could sort of make out what everything said, and I selected "Gentoo Linux 2.6.19-r5" from my list, and I got an error saying it couldn't mount the filesystem (I think; I couldn ...

[Solved] Genkernel error

I'm in the middle of an install right now, and when I typed "genkernel all" I get a message about how there is no "/usr/src/linux" and genkernel doesn't work. How do I fix this?

Thanks guys!

Gentoo would work fine on that setup, but I probably wouldn't use Gnome or KDE. For the best performance out of that machine, I'd use something lighter like Xfce or Fluxbox. Meaning if you don't use Gentoo, Xubuntu would be a good choice. Like others have stated, it depends on if you want source or ...

Perhaps you mean WM ? Being window manager? Like a desktop environment (DE)?

If that is what you meant, then it depends on your specs. Gnome and KDE use more resources than Xfce or *box (Flux, Black, I think there is Blue), but tend to come with more little things, if you know what I mean. For a ...

I had this problem too. Try this.

1. Go into your BIOS.
2. Go to Integrated Peripherals or something like that.
3. Change IDE/SATA Ctrl or something like that to "AHCI".
4. Save and exit.
5. When starting Gentoo, type "gentoo all-generic-ide".

Hope that helps.

I use the IFS Driver and the only problem I've encountered was sometimes, Windows wants to format the drive (actually happening right now  ). Otherwise, it's pretty nice.

To access your computers BIOS, during startup, you usually press "Del". If you bought an OEM machine and didn't build your computer, the manufacturers may have disabled your BIOS, so you won't be able to get in there at all.

Also, if it isn't the "Del" key, then the POST screen should say somewhere ...

Via C3

Well, I searched around the forums for a topic about this, but couldn't find one, so I apologize if one has already been made  .

So, here's the story. I'm building a system with a Mini-Itx board, and I was wondering if the Via C3 processor cooperates with Gentoo. I'm not new to Linux, but I ...

@Underdone: No, I'm sure I had the actual file, not the checksum. It did have .bz2 at the end and it also was over 100MB.

@swooshOnLn: Nope, I had the actual file, not the [] next to it. I made sure of that once I saw those there.

Also, I did cd to /mnt/gentoo, so no problems there. I guess I'll ...
