Hal and Coldplug

  • Quote

Post by Interimo » Fri Mar 09, 2007 12:00 pm

Well, I used genkernel for compiling my kernel, and like the docs. said, emerged coldplug. Now, I have an up-and-running Xfce4 box, and I need some things gone. Mainly xffm (OMG why does it suck so bad) and xterm (in favor of xfce-extra/terminal). I'm having some problems with that. When I try to emerge terminal, I get an error about xffm and how they can't be on the same system. So I try to emerge Thunar and get an error because I don't have hal. So I try to emerge hal, and get an error about coldplug.. Is there any way to get hal and coldplug working nicely, or will I have to live without one of the two?

As always, help is greatly appreciated.

I'm using genkernel too, but without coldplug.
The Gentoo Linux Genkernel Guide does not even mention coldplug.

Why don't you remove xffm first? You want it gone, right?

.
Thunar has a 'hal' use flag. Emerge with -hal.
Or, remove coldplug first.

Note:
From Gentoo udev Guide
Note: You no longer need to emerge coldplug if you're using udev version 103 and higher, as udev itself will handle module loading. If you are upgrading to version 103, you must unmerge coldplug (emerge -aC coldplug) before upgrading udev. Be sure to remove the coldplug init script from all runlevels (rc-update del coldplug), and then delete it from /etc/init.d/ afterward.

Yeah, basically unmerge coldplug and update UDEV (current version is 104, I think), the docs are pretty clear on that...
You may need to sync before, don't know how "old" your portage is. Oh, and don't forget to update the config files after you update UDEV (you will be reminded, don't worry...), otherwise funny things like infinite loops easily happen, can tell by experience

Well, I can't emerge Thunar or Terminal, because of the package '<xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.4'. Notice the '<' in front of the package. WTF? I can't unmerge it when I type the name with the '<", and I can't unmerge it without it. How am I supposed to get rid of that stupid package, if I can't unmerge it with either name?

Edit: I got Terminal emerged, and wow! I like :D . Transparency = awesome. But, I still can't emerge Thunar, and since I unmerged xffm already, I don't have a file manager. Are there any good temporary solutions, until I figure this out? Or a good enough one I won't want Thunar?

The literal error would be more helpful.

I never used Thunar, so I have no idea why it's great.
But I like the simplicity of rox
