Via C3

Well, I searched around the forums for a topic about this, but couldn't find one, so I apologize if one has already been made

.

So, here's the story. I'm building a system with a Mini-Itx board, and I was wondering if the Via C3 processor cooperates with Gentoo. I'm not new to Linux, but I am new to Gentoo, and I'm still trying to understand these "USE" flags and such. I get most of the configuring stuff (X and the like) and I think I understand "USE" flags for the most part. They are used to narrow the options of dependencies installed while installing a program, right? Like so you don't install more than you need, or for the wrong platform? That's where I come into some trouble. I haven't found much documentation dealing with the C3, so I don't know what to use with it, USE flag and install wise. I imagine that Gentoo could run nicely on it because it's extreme configure ability, which is nice for a low powered Mini-Itx setup. But I'd rather spend $50 extra and get a setup with an AMD Geode or an Intel chip if the setup will be that much easier.

If anyone has any incite into the C3 processor, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can think of USE flags as being equivalent to ./configure options. They enable/disable optional features in packages. They are generally not hardware specific (except for things like VIDEO_CARDS, INPUT_DEVICES), so you need not worry about setting any special ones for a C3.

I have an EPIA Mini-ITX M9000 with a C3 running as my Gentoo Box for about three years - I think. I do not know which keywords you used while searching the net, the forum and the wiki but I recommend that you search for "epia" instead of C3 or mini-ix. You should find quite alot infos. I am at work rso I cannot give you more details right now.

The only things that might be special regarding USE-Flags about the epia might be some flags for accelerated mpeg2 decoding (unichrome, cle266, openchrome or s.th. like that). The C3 and the hardware on your board are more important for your kernel config and the CFLAGS.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. In that case, I'll probably get that board.
