My problem has always been that whatever shape the pointer is in when it goes across the divide from the primary monitor to the secondary, it stays that way on the secondary. So if its an arrow, it stays an arrow no matter what. if its a crosshair, it stays a crosshair. Does that work with 8.40?

This may be true, but that fact that if no LINGUAS is set it doesn't use the default locale... mmyeah, that sounds like a bug.

I saw some output on startup that dbus needs a /dev/root symlink to your root filesystem. If DBUS doesn't start it may cause what you're seeing

ati fglrx modprobe fails - Unknown symbol try_to_freeze

Whenever I modprobe fglrx with the new ati-drivers-8.35.5 I get

fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.
fglrx: Unknown symbol try_to_freeze

I rebuilt it several times but no love. I'm using the suspend2 sources and have been for a while ...

Has anyone gotten the piped output to update-world to work? Ever time I try I get this

No arguments supplied. If you're piping from the emerge command (emerge -p <package> | update-world), this is fine. Otherwise, cancel and type 'update-world --help' for usage ...

Re: no openoffice,no screensaver, emerge fetches nothing

First surprise: there's no way I can configure Xscreensavers from within gnome (I don't even have the corresponding menu item, not even when I login to gdm as root).

gnome doesn't use xscreensaver anymore. Try gnome-screensaver. Its a gtk version. After that, check out the main menu->System ...

I had to do what was in this openoffice forum thread to install the English libraries. and now spellchecking and autocomplete works. Seems like a bug in the ebuild to me.

[SOLVED] openoffice 2.2 - no spelling, no auto-complete

I upgraded to openoffice 2.2. Now I can't get spell checking working, either explicit or the red underline thingy. I found a blog post that said that in 2.2 you have to set the language by running File->Wizards->Install New Dictionaries but when I run that, nothing happens. It just sits there and ...

ati-config crashes X on laptop lid close

Every time I close the lid on my Thinkpad T43p and open it again X has crashed and gdm is waiting for me to log in.

I tracked it down to acpi calling /etc/acpi/ati-powermode.sh when the lid is shut which is then calling

su $user -c "/opt/bin/aticonfig --set-powerstate=3 --effective=now"

When I ...

I started letting gdm sacrifice whatever it wants and everything has been swell. gdm can be used to start kde and any other ...

I solved this, and MANY other weirdo problems dealing with application communication by giving up on my meticulously crafted xinit and xsession files and startx and finally just went with gdm to start my desktop. It takes care of a lot of dbus session initiation and other magical things that make ...

While it might work, I think the removal of asm/page.h from linux-headers was deliberate.

here's the kernel patch removing it from being exported to user space
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/1/5/1

and the perl patch for removing the dependency

I think the addition of revdep-rebuild now makes this the single best gentoo script ever. This script alone increases stability and ease of frequent or infrequent updates enormously. Thanks a lot.

Given your description I would suggest buying more nvidia products ;-)
I have ATI in my work laptop but would never buy an ATI card for personal use for exactly this type of reason.

I've had nothing but good experiences with nvidia and nothing but crap from ati. meh

That's how it's supposed to work--it lets you know there is a fetch restriction so you can download the file before proceeding. Did you download the file and put it in your disfiles directory? If you did and it still gives the warning, then there's a problem.

Yeah, I saw the code where you ...
