Weird mousepointer problem in Xorg 7.0

  • Quote

Post by fluflux » Wed Jul 05, 2006 1:49 pm

Hello,

Today I upgraded to xorg 7.0. All is working great, except the mousepointer. I have a dualscreen configuration (ATI 9550), on one screen the pointer is normal. On the other screen, the mouse 'pointer' is a 1 by 1 inch box filled with garbage pixels. This kinda ruins the GUI, and is not easy to work with :). I tried to look up this problem on google with no result.

I suspect the problem is -not- with the video drivers since:

* The problem occurs with the Xorg default (open source) radeon drivers
* The problem occurs with the ati binary only fglrx drivers

Since these are two completely different drivers, I assume the problem is somewhere else. Any ideas? I'll be glad to give more info / logs / ...

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan (from Belgium)

I've been able to isolate the problem (but not solve it)

I have two screens with a different resolution, one 1024x768 ; the other 1280x1024.
When I set both to 1024x768, the problem is solved. Otherwise, the problem remains :(.

I've not been able to solve this problem, however:

*When using a virtual resolution at one screen that equals the (larger) resolution of the other screen, the problem does not occur. However, I don't like a scrolling screen, so that's useless.

*When using the SWCursor (instead of HWCursor) option in xorg.conf , the pointer seems at first normal. However, the SWCursor mode is seriously corrupted. When moving windows, the cursor leaves copies of itself all over the screen. This happens many times during normal usage, so it's not workable either.

This is a very strange problem, and is introducted since Xorg 7.0 . The earlier versions worked perfectly here, with exactly the same dual monitor setup and resolutions.

Anybody?

funny thing, maybe its related:

if i start a secound x server, i have the same problems.
if i switch back to the first, i have:
Monitor 1 = working mouse, everything else is pixel garbage
Monitor 2 = pixel garbage mouse, everything else is working

....

ps: it worked fine with 6.9

Has somebody figured out this problem yet? I'm still having this issue on my AMD64 running 7.1 and it's getting to the point where it's not really usable. One thing I don't know is noted on mine is, when I go to the second screen, it stays the same mouse pointer that I had on the first screen. So if I was widening the screen, it keeps the side of the window mouse cursor.

It was fixed for one version of the binary ati driver but in the latest one in ubuntu, the same bug is back. i guess we just wait for ati to fix it for real

I have just run

emerge --update ati-drivers

which installed version 8.40.4 and the pointer is now an arrow.

My problem has always been that whatever shape the pointer is in when it goes across the divide from the primary monitor to the secondary, it stays that way on the secondary. So if its an arrow, it stays an arrow no matter what. if its a crosshair, it stays a crosshair. Does that work with 8.40?

I have checked this out and the pointer will change shape when it is on the secondary monitor. Also when you move around an application it will change shape like it normally does. The pointer also responds to the xsetroot

DISPLAY=:0.1 /usr/bin/xsetroot -cursor /usr/include/X11/bitmaps/right_ptr /usr/include/X11/bitmaps/right_ptrmsk
