Hardware question

My soundcard (nVidia MCP 51) was working great, and now I've broken something! cat /proc/asound/cards gives:

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfebd8000 irq 233

But aplay -l gives:

$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:222: no soundcards found...

What's ...

Re: forcedeth 0.48 on LiveCD 2006.0

I did some more thinking about it, and then I found how to fix and recreate the problem.

Let me define a cold boot versus a full power off. A cold boot would be shutting the system down into "power off" mode, but the 5V power on the motherboard is still there. Pulling the plug from the wall is a ...

Re: 2006 Install CD boots kernel, but freezes

Not sure exactly what the problem is, but here are a couple of possibilities:

1. Your CD didn't burn correctly. If you don't mind burning a second CD and chucking the one you have, the problem might be there.

2. The kernel hits an oops very, very early. This doesn't happen a lot. Try putting ...

Re: Installing Gentoo 2006.0 In Triboot

I have a dualboot with Windows XP and SuSE Linux 10 and ... the Gentoo Partition.
Hi! Welcome to the gentoo forums, by the way. Let's see... you actually have lots of options, so I'm trying to figure out which one you are looking for. If you have some extra space on a disk, or an extra disk you ...

forcedeth 0.48 on LiveCD 2006.0

I was ready to get forcedeth 0.48 working on my Asus A8N-VM/CSM, so I downloaded the 2006.0 x86 LiveCD. But it didn't behave any differently than forcedeth 0.35. :-( I read on the nvnews forum that cold-booting the machine from Win XP would fix it. Still didn't work. forcedeth recognizes the device ...

Re: Second Monitor

Okay, so if I found the right info on the web, your flatscreen is connected to your DVI, and you have S-Video out. Is this how you are set up for dual-display?

Now, what is it you want to do, run the nvidia driver in spanning mode? (X just sees one double-wide screen)

Or do you want to run X on ...

Note that I am using the amd64 platform, so some of these requires ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64".
Also, s/pink/orange/. Can't tell in this light. :-P

MCP51 (SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio) (ad198x)

Can you recommend a cheapish sound card that will give me full surround in Linux using Alsa.
Yeah.

It looks like there aren't any. (that I know of) (maybe a Creative XFi, but that's not a cheapish!)

Okay, that's just my $0.02 on that. Sorry, ignore it since I didn't even search the web.

I'm really curious as to if this actually would work. If you do this, please let me know how it worked out. Good luck! I don't know if I already said, I have a working amd64 install. But shouldn't the amd64 livecd work? (It shouldn't crash on sata_nv.) Plus, yeah, this other question about ...

Converting from x86 to amd64

Yeah, so I want to make the jump from x86 to amd64. A little reading has led me to this process, AFAIK:

1. Get the system working in x86, especially the network driver.
2. Build an amd64 kernel.
3. Boot into amd64 kernel, still have an x86 filesystem. (Will this work??)
4. Change the CHOST, etc.
5 ...

Re: BUT

BUT...

Don't run their installer. Run ./NVIDIA... -x as a non-root user (to be safe). Then you can get their X config tool out from the files it dumps.

See the nVidia guide at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

Package CD

Although the universal CD contains the latest release (2005.1 right now), the packages in 2005.1 still get updated pretty frequently. So the universal CD isn't rebuilt every night... that means it could be slightly out of date. But it will have a really recent kernel, etc.

Yeah, don't burn the ...

Different Distros

Hi,

Gentoo is in a class all by itself for being customizable. So I'd say, you want to end up using Gentoo. But how you get there, well, that's different for every box.

Knoppix is designed to run straight from the CD. No install needed. That's kind of what a Gentoo liveCD does, except in Gentoo it ...

Re: badblocks

What you're looking for is the program "badblocks"

man badblocks

Or http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man8/badblocks.8.html

Although I've never run it on an entire block device (it's meant to be run on partitions) it should work.

You can configure SMART data with smartmontools:

man smartctl ...

/dev/psaux mice (PS/2 mice) do not support hotplugging. Can you describe your computer setup a little more? Do you have a USB port on both computers? If so, could you try plugging the KVM switch into USB ports on both computers and not use the PS/2 mouse port?

You could also try compiling the psaux ...

Re: rt2570: System kind of freezes on ifup

I was going to guess that your keyboard was a USB keyboard. Maybe I'm wrong. If you're using a USB keyboard, can you try borrowing a PS/2 keyboard to see if that one will not die on you?

Can you post the output from /var/log/kernel/current when it freezes? That may be tricky without a keyboard, but ...
