2006 Install CD boots kernel, but freezes

Booting from the 2006 install CD I hit enter to boot the default kernel. After "attempting to mount cd:-" of each of my hard drive partitions, it finds the cd in /dev/hdc and mounts it, telling me "CD medium found on /dev/hdc." I hit enter to select the default keymap and get the following messages:

Determining root device. . .
Determining looptype. . .
Mounting squashfs filesystem
Copying read-write image contents to temp fs
cp: etc: No such file or directory.

and then it stops. No activity light, nothing. I can enter text and carriage returns, but the only command it seems to recognize at this point is ctrl-alt-delete. Any ideas about what the issue might be?

Not sure exactly what the problem is, but here are a couple of possibilities:

1. Your CD didn't burn correctly. If you don't mind burning a second CD and chucking the one you have, the problem might be there.

2. The kernel hits an oops very, very early. This doesn't happen a lot. Try putting noacpi on the kernel command line. If that doesn't work, try noapic. Are there any error messages before that?

I ended up burning a new CD and it boots fine. Thanks.

I had the same problem, but after burning 3 cds and trying to reboot each a few times I finally got one that works.
