I did some cleaning up and rebuilt my entire system. Problem went away. There must be some things that revdep-rebuild doesn't catch.

emerge --depclean
emerge -e world

Careful with '--depclean'. It will delete everything but you're most recent kernel whether you're using that kernel or not. I ...

[Solved] gdm: child 3210 crashed of signal 6

gdm always seems to fail the first time that I login. On the second attempt, it succeeds and I happily use X until the next time I reboot/login.

In /var/log/messages , I see this:
May 6 10:32:43 localhost gdm[3210]: pam_unix(gdm:session): session opened for user kurtg by (uid=0)

Re: [solved] Pidgin - Away message

btw, I spent a year at the RWTH. I fondly remember hiking the hills around Aachen.
I seriously hope that's not all you remember of that year ;)

No, I figured out early that I wasn't going to sit the exams, so I used Aachen as a home base and traveled throughout Europe. Strange how I seemed it ...

[Solved] Pidgin - Away message

This seems like such a no-brainer that I'm embarrassed to ask, but if I want to set my away message to something witty like "gone to see my parole officer" or "not here, try my cell phone: xxx-xxx-xxxx" how does one do that?

I've tried emerging the 'x11-plugins/pidgin-extprefs' and looked in the ...

Okay, refer to this: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Set_up_a_vpn_client_with_mppe_encryption

And, get your settings right. I had sha1 built into the kernel. I changed it to a module and did:

modprobe sha1
modprobe ppp_mppe

And, it loaded. I'm amazed that my Verizon wireless was working without ...

I'm joining the thread because I have the exact same problem. I've been using ppp_mppe for some time, but I just noticed that it's failing to load during the boot. As I remember, this was very easy to enable in the kernel config, make, install, and modprobe with no issues.

I'm thinking that it's a ...

Just wanted to check back. I've tried re-emerging CUPS, postscript filter, etc., but nothing.

I forgot to mention that I had trouble with udev about the same time that this problem started to happen.

CUPS - PCL XL error - IllegalTag

I've been using CUPS and a HP LaserJet 3320 forever, but after a recent upgrade, my jobs end up as:
Stopped: job-stopped
and the first time after a reboot I get this printed out:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalTag
Operator: 0xf7

That's it. I've tried ...

ipw3945 - cannot access `/sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw3945/00*/c

I've been using ipw3945 successfully for 18 months, but I recently had some udev problems with eth0 and may have messed up my wireless configuration. When I want to start the wireless, I do the following:

# /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start

Re: udev perhaps?

Are you using udev? I had a weird problem a while back where udev kept renaming my NICs every now and then ... I had to keep going back into the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and manually change them back.

Thank! That's definitely part of the problem. I've been able to get my ...

I'm having a few odd problems after my system crashed during an 'emerge -uNDav'. Dell kindly replaced my motherboard and I fined up the emerge, but I'm getting this problem:

MPPC kernel patches

Does anybody know of MPPC kernel patches? This site: http://mppe-mppc.alphacron.de/ hasn't provided any patches beyond 2.6.13 which is no longer in the portage tree.

I'd like to use it with a Verizon EVDO card. I need to use the 'mppe-mppc' use flag with PPP or I frequent hang ups. I'm hoping that ...

I recompiled most of my system (497 packages) with:

And, it fixed the problem. There must have been a package that wasn't up to date.
