I did some cleaning up and rebuilt my entire system. Problem went away. There must be some things that revdep-rebuild doesn't catch.

Careful with '--depclean'. It will delete everything but you're most recent kernel whether you're using that kernel or not. I ...

gdm always seems to fail the first time that I login. On the second attempt, it succeeds and I happily use X until the next time I reboot/login.

In /var/log/messages , I see this:

Are you having any issues with sha1 loading during boot? Check the dmesg log.

I'm joining the thread because I have the exact same problem. I've been using ppp_mppe for some time, but I just noticed that it's failing to load during the boot. As I remember, this was very easy to enable in the kernel config, make, install, and modprobe with no issues.

I've been using ipw3945 successfully for 18 months, but I recently had some udev problems with eth0 and may have messed up my wireless configuration. When I want to start the wireless, I do the following:

Oh geez, I finally tracked down that "damn clicking noise" on my desk. It was the hard drive. I turned it off, repositioned it, and turned it back on. It's working.
