changeing my .xinitrc to what you originally posted fixed my problem. Now I can enjoy my favourite window manager again.

export XDG_MENU_PREFIX="xfce-"
#exec startfluxbox
exec ck-launch-session xfce4-session

Thanks for help!

I fixed the error by updating world

I ran emerge -uD world and the compile completed. If anyone sees the reason I would like a refresher. I believe I have seen this error before, but for the life of me cannot recall the reason behind the error.
Thanks,
Jon

You're both quite welcome.

Out of curiosity and if possible, I'd be interested in knowing which ATI chipset you have.

My problem child is a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H-Rev1 with the ATI 780G and SB700 chips. I'm running a Phenom 9600 CPU ...

This happened on my moms ubuntu box also running xfce4. There some kind of bug in xfce4? or this a worm or something? Cause the Panel just disappeared! weird.
You can run it and it will show up,by typing xfce-panel in a terminal or run command, but it will not start on its own. I also recompiled ...

I had to link the TLS .so file

I had to go into the /home/**USER**/.amsn/plugins directory and do this command: ln -s usr/lib64/libtls1.50.so
course that is going to be a little different if your using a different architecture like x86, but should solve your problem.
Hope this helped!
