For the people having trouble with a -v2, may I suggest you use my overlay ( layman -a je_fro ) and emerge:
mactel-linux-sources

take a look at my configs at http://dev.gentoo.org/~je_fro/mactel-linux-configs/

yep, I'm having trouble emerging 8.39.4 with kernel 2.6.22.1 on x86_64 machine.

I believe I'm getting these error messages:

chmod: changing permissions of '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.39.4/distdir/ati-driver-installer-8.39.4-x86.x86_64.run': Permission denied

Nope, there's no ebuild in portage that will work with the MBP chipset. He has to use subversion until madwifi-ng-0.9.4 comes out.

Where should I get madwifi-ng-svn from?

Also from my overlay.

As for your linux-uvc problems, I was suprised that I never had any trouble with it. I just looked at the instructions and put the firmware where it was supposed to go. You can "blacklist" the linux-uvc module if you want.

If I were you I'd do this:
layman -a je_fro
emerge mactel-linux-sources

Then use my kernel config from here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~je_fro/mactel-linux-configs/
cd /usr/src
ln -sf linux-2.6.22-mactel-r1 linux
cd linux
wget http://dev.gentoo.org/~je_fro/mactel-linux-configs/config-2.6.22
mv ...

A little good news for those who are frustrated with their mouse (touchpad) freaking out every so often...
I've added sys-kernel/macbook-linux-sources to my overlay, and put some configs on my webspace at:

http://dev.gentoo.org/~je_fro/mactel-linux-configs/

Since none of the suspend stuff works ...

Here's roughly what I did...
I followed whatever relevant instructions I could find at the rEFIt, mactel-linux, and gentoo-wiki sites regarding repartitioning. I don't recall whether I installed through a chroot from a ubuntu livecd, or a gentoo install cd, but I know I had to use the ethernet port ...

here's my bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=319965
I don't have a lot of hope in getting it fixed...what I've done in the meantime is to create another user "screen1" and add all my ~/.mozilla files to his homedir.
I can launch firefox on screen1 now with "sudo -u screen1 -H /opt ...

For those of you using Pic0's overlay I've bumped the kernel to 2.6.21.3 with mactel-patches revision 126.
Also, madwifi-ng was bumped to subversion revision 2431.
Everything is working fine here.

ath0 used to drop out occasionally with the older madwifi revision, but it hasn't done it yet with -r ...

Pic0's mactel-sources has a "powersaving" USE flag that enabled a patch altering the touchpad code. With USE="powersaving" my mouse cursor would be real "wiggly" and the buttons wouldn't function properly after an X restart. Disabling that USE flag fixed the issue. It didn't appear to have any ...

I know most of us who are l33t enough to install gentoo on an mbp probably don't care about beryl, but I think it's..well.. nice.
HaHaHa....I'm so fscking 1337 that I _DO_ run beryl on my MBP, but I do so using the xeffects overlay. I also have Sync to VBlank checked and haven't noticed anything ...

That's great news about the powersaving...I have to use OSX most of the time because of the heat and the battery usage under linux.
Also, the AHCI driver seems to be an improvement: WITH AHCI
