I never used the modem in my laptop, but imagine one of those hardcore travellers. They might need this. Nonetheless, I believe it was a good decision to leave it out, and pcmcia. These hardcore travellers are probably staying in bigger, better, more expensive hotels which will probably have wlan.
Oh, and wireless: on the apple website they say "Airport Extreme". So I guess they stick to the broadcom chip.
