So what do we do if we're having this problem, but for one reason or another, do not want to upgrade to Apache 2.2?

Do we just roll PHP back? If so, to what version?

Sure thing. This is my config for a Big Desktop setup with my primary 1680x1050 display on the right and the secondary 1280x1024 display on the left. Note that after loading X I need to use xrandr to switch to the appropriate dimensions.

Wow, turns out turning on Xinerama support in my WM does work. I thought that Big Desktop mode didn't support Xinerama extensions for detecting displays. I guess I was wrong.

Re: SLOTs and blocking

Is there any way to force a SLOTed package to just update the old package instead of creating a new SLOT? One approach would be: emerge =$package-$version .
The packages in question still want to install as new slots: # emerge -av --update phpmyadmin phppgadmin

These are the packages that would ...

Turns out Beryl is known not to work with ATI's Big Desktop mode, as it doesn't handle combined resolutions as high as mine (1680x1050 + 1280x1024). Any other ideas?

Do you want to maximize only on one monitor? works with fvwm, fluxbox, kde, gnome, ... if you enable xinerama support in X (and probably use flag) That's exactly what I want, but I am using ATI's Big Desktop mode (so I can get 3d acceleration on both displays) and not Xinerama.

iirc Beryl has ...

Window manager support for Big Desktop/TwinView [SOLVED]

Okay, so I've figured out the dual display options with Linux now. We've got Dual Head, which does dual screens but doesn't allow dragging between them. To solve that, there's Xinerama to combine the screens together, but without hardware acceleration. Finally, ATI and nVidia have released Big ...

SLOTs and blocking

Is there any way to force a SLOTed package to just update the old package instead of creating a new SLOT? This most commonly happens to me with phpMyAdmin and phpPGAdmin. I understand the beauty of slotting and all, but usually I want to update these in-place rather than installing another side-by ...

Thanks guys. Using Voyageur's net-misc overlay and jake1981's font fix makes everything work perfectly. This all works so much better than FreeNX was. I wonder how long until we can have this into Portage?

PPPoE and LAN over single NIC [Solved]

I'm trying to set up the same kind of connection I had in Windows. That is, the ADSL modem linked via crossover to a hub, and my Gentoo box connected to that hub. (The idea is to have LAN access to other machines in the house, but still be able to connect to ADSL using only a single NIC).

I've ...

GUI archive browser

In my search for desktop Linux software, one thing I have yet to find is a good GUI archive browser (something similar to, say, WinRAR). I do not mean just a GUI archive program, since those don't offer much more than the console utils. What I mean is an app where you can browse through an archive ...

Sound stopped working (ALSA monolithic kernel)

Due to previous problems and module headaches, I ended up compiling a sound-monolithic kernel with ALSA. (Kernel ver: 2.6.12.5). My sound was working for a time, but now things have gone silent. I don't use this system very often as a desktop, so not much has changed. The only thing that I think ...

Don't know if this makes any sense, but deleting asound.state and buidling a sound monolythic kernel without OSS emulation seems to have gotten sound working. Again, I don't have any of the extra options people have been mentioning to mute in alsamixer for my onboard es1371. Kernel version: 2.6.12.5.

I went ahead and tried the solution posted, only now I get

Code: Select all

FATAL: Error inserting snd_ens1371 (/lib/modules/2.6.12.5/kernel/sound/pci/snd-ens1371.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
I should note that I am using kernel 2.6.12.5 rather than 2.6.13

azureus-bin & commons-cli: portage dependency confusion

I recently did the normal "emerge --sync && emerge --update --deep world" and came back to find that my system had failed on emerging jakarta-regexp. Puzzled as to why I would need jakarta-regexp in the first place, I proceeded to look over what exactly what else was being installed.

extract the files and look for ../alsa-driver-1.0.10rc1/alsa-kernel/pci/ens1370.c

copy this file to your kernel directory, for example /usr/src/linux/sound/pci/

then rebuild your kernel and it should work again.
When I rebuild, I am assuming I should have alsa then compiled with the kernel as ...

Forget the modules in this cases!

Way to build a working system :
1) rename /lib/modules/[your-kernel-version]
2) emerge unmerge alsa-driver alsa-oss alsa-firmware
3) build a sound monolythic kernel. Put all needed sound drivers in kernel, do not build modules!
- do not forget to make modules ...

I am not usually much of a "me too" poster either, but I am having the same exact problem as Siege_72 with the same sound card (es1371), even down to the static when I turn mixer levels up. I have the same setup too, with the alsa-drivers emerged separate, sound support enabled in kernel, and OSS ...
