Don't know if this makes any sense, but deleting asound.state and buidling a sound monolythic kernel without OSS emulation seems to have gotten sound working. Again, I don't have any of the extra options people have been mentioning to mute in alsamixer for my onboard es1371. Kernel version: 2.6.12.5.

Hey guys,

after 3-4 moths without music, after searching so many weg pages and forums, after hours and hours of trials and errors (more errors than trials), I just fixed my alsa!

The problem was nothing what was described here.

Whatever I did, even echo "jjj" > /dev/dsp stopped - no chance!

dmesg told me "cannot submit datapipe for urb 0, err = -38". After searching some time, I found out that usb-audio can't handle USB hubs.

The only thing I had to do: Unplug my audio card from the usb hub and plug it directly into the computer's usb socket. That's all.

The weird thing is that there is a bug about this from january 2004, and it's still there (kernel 2.6.13-r2 with drivers as modules).

Now I'm happy, after trying since about april this year! :D

Hi folks-

I just got my alsa working on a Thinkpad T42p after a few hours of unloading and reloading drivers to no avail. I'm using KDE, and at some point must have added esound (a gnome-ism) in my default runlevel. The following commands got sound working again on my system:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/esound stop
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart
rc-update del esound battery default
FWIW, I then changed amaroK to use gstreamer and the alsasink, and everything's peachy.

Back to problems again after a new alsa-lib came out and borked everything. Tried switching back to alsa-driver and everything configs fine, but I only have the fuzzyness again. I should take this time to note that there are a ton of other unrelated sound problems people are mentioning with things like unmuting/muting extra things in their mixers or dealing with sound daemons and whatnot. I have actually now seen/heard of this bug occuring with other people and it is a bug that is specifically for people with onboard ens1371 sound.
