I've wanted to set this up when I was working from home a short while and my cable provider was having really poor uptime. Unfortunately the option to work from home ended for all employees at the little startup and I never got an opportunity to try.

In exchange for these links I would really ...

If it actually comes out under the GPL, I'm definitely interested in trying it out on Gentoo/SPARC. One thing I'm wondering is if the open-sourced version(s) of Java will include a 1.4 series JVM or if it will just be 1.5.

estatic about open source Java

I'm really glad they open sourced it. Otherwise large scale enterprise apps would have started moving towards Mono and C# once it's mature enough for everybody besides the M$ zealots. This would result in letting all sorts of bad visual basic "programmers" create bad code.

Apparently this is not working for me. I am looking at my wireless connections, and its default gateway and DNS server are set to be the IP of the wireless router. Since the WAN port is not working, I can never get anything from the internet...

Sounds like you haven't turned off DHCP on the ...

ntop?

ntop will tell you the bandwith you are using, and the sites that are being connected to. But it won't tell you what the firewall rejected.

Thanks for the Howto

It's well organized, however I don't know how many people I share this preference with, but a single HTML page would be nicer IMO.

If he would have runing his AWStats in a secure environment, then he would not have any trouble. I did not say that it is okay to not modify the limits on a server! I was just saying, that if you put your server/system on the net, you need to get it secure with other techniques and that modifying ...

This would definatley be the best route with the ability to override the defaults to more or less to suit the needs of the admin. I would not like that! If I could wish, then I would like something like limits-config (like the java-config, gcc-config, mirror-select, ufed, etc). But something which ...

What says the default limits have to be static, they could be calculated during the install process or during boot to something that is near the limits of the system, but still prevents a fork bomb from causing nonresponsivness

This would definatley be the best route with the ability to override ...

Re: *shrug*

Someone convince Linus to put policy code in-kernel. If he does, then I'll deal with it. Until then, I'll remember to set ulimits for shell users on my own.

Folks, there are *plenty* of Unix system administration books out there. Gentoo is not out to teach you these things; the learning is your ...

They decided to not do anything about it. :(
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85656#c49

I thought this route was so unbelivably wrong, that I decided to create an account just to voice my opinion.

There should absolutely be limits on the # of processes, and people with more esoteric ...
