Balance load between 2 internet connections tips request

  • Quote

Post by examer » Sun Nov 26, 2006 10:15 pm

Hey, i got two internet connections atm. Im running a gentoo box as my router and was wondering if anyone could
direct me to some good site or give me a few tips on how i could make it split the load between the two. Im somewhat familiar with iptables and tc as im using tc atm to shape the traffic so dc++ and bittorrent dont totally gobble up all my upstream.

Any tips or hints or good places where i could learn how to do it would be nice. I tryd searching for load balance etc but just end yo with allot of cluster load balancing pages.

try looking for "quality of service" or "traffic shaping"

cheers

I found out there was no really good way to balance the lines but you could pretty easy setup so diffrent ports used diffrent conenctions or use the builtin round-robin routing scheme the kernel have. As this pages explain..

http://linux-ip.net/html/adv-multi-internet.html

http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.rpdb.multiple-links.html

Now, i got it all working nicely and http and wow are now using the slow but low latency cable-modem and everything else are traffic shaped and bandwith limited on the adsl line. Now i got just one more tiny problem..=) I want to brows on the cable modem..BUT i want http downloads to use the adsl line as it got allot higher bandwith..

Any suggestions on how i could filter out http downloads so i could mark them for the adsl line instaid of the cable-modem?

You probably don't want to do that as any authenticated downloads wouldn't work if you managed to get it working.

I've wanted to set this up when I was working from home a short while and my cable provider was having really poor uptime. Unfortunately the option to work from home ended for all employees at the little startup and I never got an opportunity to try.

In exchange for these links I would really appreciate hearing about your experience and which method you went with:
