To make things more interesting, unmerging com_err will stop wget from working, meaning you can't get anything through the default portage.

The workaround is to download the e2fsprogs-libs file manually with your browser, and drop them in the distfiles folder, and emerge e2fsprogs. It shall build ...

On a more serious note, will we get to upgrade to Qt 4.4 with this next rev? :twisted:

All the Qt 4 releases are backwards compatible, meaning you can build KDE 4.0 with Qt 4.4. You might even get a speedup.

Edit: Ok, they are compatible, but KDE might have gone version specific in this release ...

As far as I know I have to use this:

to be able to use the testing branch of the x86 architecture. Correct me if I am wrong.

If you want to use the testing branch as your default install, yes.

If you want to test a set of packages to stabilize it, you do it in a ...

Yeah...it seems to want to unmask qt-4.4, and while I haven't done my research, I've gathered that qt-4.4 & KDE 4.0.0 don't work.

Well, KDE 4.0.x are expected to be built against QT 4.3. However, the KDE devs are feverishly waiting for QT 4.4, a lot of very good and needed toys are coming.

I'd ...

There aren't any trustees anymore. Or at least there aren't anyone we'd trust Gentoo.

Only developers and users are left. And if there's ever an answer, the latter won't be heard.

I had the layout problems, Insert was / and / was Insert, only letters worked... that's crazy!

Doing

Code: Select all

echo '>=sys-apps/hal-0.5.10' >> /etc/portage/package.mask
emerge -1 hal
/etc/init.d/hald restart
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
/etc/init.d/xdm start
solved these keyboard problems.

If you don't know how to make a C program, just use this in your console:

echo 'int main(){return 0;}' > test.c && gcc -v -Q -march=native -O2 test.c -o test && rm test.c test

Just be sure gcc is aliased to 4.2 GCC series. If not, you can change it with gcc-config.

For example, my results ...

Why not, Gentoo is great to keep your room (and you) warm. Unless you like to feel the chilly winds.

I've been playing with the latest Ubuntu beta. More bugs come and go in a day than I've seen in 2.5 years of Gentoo.

To all the over-worked, flamed, maligned, cussed ... Gentoo devs: keep up the good work we like it here.
