mine ffmpeg use flags :

Anyone with youtube HTML5 problems might be seeing this bug. The 5.0.371 ebuild fixed that.

We just fixed bug #314977, those that do not have working html5 videos, please test latest 5.0.371.0, which now depends on ffmpeg with USE=threads.

This fixed it at least for the bug reporter and Pawel, so I'm hoping we finally got this worked out :)

I have a weird bug on YouTube's HTML5 "experiment" -- chromium will work just fine, but if I try to watch the same videos with chromium-bin, I get YouTube's error message "Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available."

At the same time, chromium-bin does play that demo just fine, so something messes with YouTube's detection of supported formats. Should I file a bug somewhere?

PS: I have just realized that perhaps chromium-bin simply doesn't support h.264? I'm using the live, -9999 versions or both chromium and chromium-bin.

As you can see in the changelog, it was added for the hard masked versions first. After more reports that confirmed it working, I'm happy to also apply the fix to all ebuilds of chromium we have in the tree. Please just sync and the updated dependency should be there.

I'm not sure. There are not enough details to tell. Generally if something doesn't work properly it's a bug. We can't do much with chromium-bin snapshots in Gentoo, but you can also file bugs upstream.

I think it uses bundled ffmpeg, which is compiled without h.264 support.

I just upgraded from 5.0.371.0 to 5.0.375.3, x264 and mp3 USE flag are used, but I now don't have html5 video for h.264 support anymore, I used to have html5 audio for ogg and m4a support with 5.0.371.0, now only ogg for both of video and audio.

Code:
[ebuild   R   ] www-client/chromium-5.0.375.3  USE="mp3 plugins-symlink x264" 0 kB

[ebuild   R   ] media-video/ffmpeg-0.5_p22846  USE="3dnow 3dnowext X alsa encode hardcoded-tables jpeg2k mmx mmxext mp3 sdl ssse3 theora threads v4l v4l2 vorbis x264 xvid zlib (-altivec) -bindist -cpudetection -custom-cflags -debug -dirac -doc -faac -faad -gsm -ieee1394 -jack -network -opencore-amr -oss -pic -schroedinger -speex -test -vdpau" VIDEO_CARDS="-nvidia" 0 kB

Please see a few posts above that the best way to get things fixed is to report a bug with enough data so the problem can be reproduced.

Ummm , you appear to have "3dnow 3dnowext + ssse3" enabled as flags that makes for an interesting CPU you have ?

I haven't paid attention to that, /proc/cpuinfo reports no 3dnow or 3dnowext suppoprt. I don't have these two USE flag in make.conf or portage.use, maybe it's turned on by default? Anyway, it works fine for me but I think I should turn it off next time ffmpeg gets updated. However I don't think this should be related to the problem 375.3 doesn't have h.264.

I have same setting as I had when I was using 371. 371 worked fine with YouTube. But 375.3 doesn't, YouTube said I don't have the support and http://html5test.com reports h.264 is not supported.

I see the issue with USE flags , mine does the same thing now and thats on ffmpeg 9999-r1

I have just tried chromium 5.0.381.0 (44885) from svn and h.264 seems to work.

It was a bug in 5.0.375.3 ebuild, and is now fixed, see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316029.

Just updating to www-client/chromium-5.0.375.9 should fix the problem with h.264.

I'm running 5.0.375.9 on amd64 with the mp3 USE flag, but html5test.com reports a no for both mp3 and wav codec support. Is this expected?

I have the same result as you.
I think that the sript has a lack, because I'm able to read mp3 and waw with chromium.

Indeed it seems to be the case. See also my comment here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316029#c3.

Thanks for reporting that mp3 and wav media work for you.

This isn't a bug, so I guess I'll post this here. I upgraded to chromium-5.0.375.9 and it is working perfectly for me. I got a nice bump in the compatibility score at html5test.com. Great job by the devs keeping up with Chromium for Gentoo.

I think you may try mozplugger (which is mostly used in 64-bit systems) instead of the "nsplugin" USE flag in app-text/acroread. (You may also use the "minimal" USE flag. If you are interested, here is my mozpluggerrc that uses adobe reader for pdf and smplayer for audio-video.)

I had never heard of the HTML5 test until now. I just ran it and Chromium 5.0.375.9 is scoring 135/160 versus 101/160 for Firefox 3.6.3. I am going to turn on chromium's optional use flags that I have disabled to see if it will bring the score up. :)

Edit: After recompiling Chromium, its score rose to 142/160. I am slightly disappointed that mp3 and wav codec support is not being detected, especially since I toggled the mp3 USE flag and aac codec support is what went on. Does anyone know why that is?
