Can't emerge mplayer2

I'm trying to run emerge @preserved-rebuild but it fails because of mplayer2:

Well, it depends on availability of working crystal balls.

But adding your version of ffmpeg/libav and the actual error may lower the requirement bar.

As the source line says:

Code: Select all

#if MP_INPUT_BUFFER_PADDING_SIZE < FF_INPUT_BUFFER_PADDING_SIZE
The value of FF_INPUT_BUFFER_PADDING_SIZE has changed (and that should have likely been an ABI break) in 2.3, so mplayer needs a patch.

mplayer2 is basically dead, just look at its development activity - http://git.mplayer2.org/mplayer2/ - barely any commits last year, none this year. You should switch to mpv, which has extremely active development.

I just got smacked by this. It's my first gentoo install and I'm still playing in a VM. I'd just added a bunch of multimedia related global use flags and was updating with --newuse when it bit me. I have no idea if it's the new use flags or a software update that did it.

I'll just make sure to avoid mplayer2 to when I start installing on real hardware.

I ran into the same problem with mplayer2 failing. I emerged mpv and set smplayer2 to use mpv. Then I get this error.
Error parsing commandline option noquiet: option not found

Exiting... (Fatal error)
What am I missing? I checked the advanced tab and the options, nothing. How does one disable that?

Thanks.

SMPlayer2 is dead as well. There is a way to make the development version of SMPlayer work with mpv, but we may need to add an option for that in the ebuild. I should look into that. In the meantime you can use mpv from the commandline, its OSD menu is quite good.

I guess the name is a bit misleading. I always thought smplayer2 and mplayer2 were a fork that was more up to date than the non-#2 apps. I guess I should unmerge the *2 stuff and use the plain stuff. Maybe you can make the needed fixes so that we can use mpv with smplayer and we can have a fairly up to date program to use.

Thanks for correcting my misinterpretation and working on getting us a proper fix.

I've switched to smplayer-9999, mpv-7.1 and ffmpeg-2.5.1 and that works great for me. I had to unmask media-video/mpv and media-video/ffmpeg in /etc/portage/package.unmask. IIRC I also had to bump the gstreamer, gst-plugins-base and gst-plugins-libav ebuilds to 1.4.4.

Hi - recent talk about mpv brought me to this post. Anyone know why mpv is hard masked? I feel I should know before throwing myself into a migration from mplayer2.

In general it would be good if portage provided a facility for devs/maintainers to note a) why a package is hard-masked and/or b) why a package marked stable upstream is still masked.

What? You mean there is one? I've never heard of it.

Thanks

Thanks! As an ffmpeg user, I guess I am OK to give this a whorl.

Would be nice if there was a equery thingy, or perhaps if it could be integrated with eix, but now I know where to look. Probably the file is not strictly formatted enough to extract the information consistently.
