Hi all

I'm building a new pc. But i'm not sure on the videocard
msi GeForce GTX 660 vs SAPPHIRE HD 7950 .
I know the nvidia closed drivers ar better , but is see many kernel improvements on the ati opensource drivers
they have the same price now . and the amd card has better hardware
the games i play are Rift - WoW - Swtor and steam games
So looking to the future . will the ati open source drivers, ever be good enough to play the games on . or better buy the nvidia card

the rest of the hardware is
ASUS H97I-PLUS
be quiet 450W
Antec ISK 600
Crucial 8 GB
i5-4590
Crucial M500 m.2 ssd
BenQ 24" Gaming Monitor RL2455HM
Antec KÜHLER H2O 650
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB

I have a dell laptop x702z. with an i7 2720QM proccesor and a nvidia gt 550m video card for now
will the prossesor be better than what I have now. and what video card is better to buy

Well if your in to games and want the best graphic performance Nvidia and its binary proprietary driver is the way to go I would say. Very easy to install and get working in gentoo to so.
I have a few ATI/AMD cards but I use Nvidia exclusively for 3D performance if you want windows or greater level of performance. And why buy hardware and not be able to exploit it fully?
Opensource drivers might be a noble idea but from what I know theres are lots of problems with licensees and patents used in the hardware so opensource GFX drivers have not taken off well. So good GFX drivers still seems to be the closed source way and there nvidia is the fastest. For opensource ATI was faster when I last checked but its still slower then nvidias closed drivers.

Also May I ask why you looking at last gen cards? Sure many of the new cards use the same GPU but there are some nice cards like GTX750 if you want low power and modest performance since it uses a brand new architecture.

GTX760 might be an option to instead of GTX660.

Intel works well from my experience but its way slow for anything that is the slightest heavy on 3D so basically out for gaming.
