How to increase the size of root partition

Hi

I am using gentoo linux on virtual machine and short of space in root partition, every time i need to clear some logs to free some space.Need your support to increase the size of root partition as I have lot of free space available in the system.
Will someone please guide me if it is possible through command line without any partition software?
