Recommendation for backup tool?

  • Quote

Post by Bill Barich » Thu Apr 19, 2012 10:34 am

I've been using Praetorian Guard before to back up our Win7 PCs at work. The backups worked very well but only on Windows. Now we switched to Gentoo and I need some recommendations for backup tools compatible to Gentoo.
I hope someone can help me.

Depends on what you need to backup, how and how often to do it.

In portage alone

Code: Select all

I have always used blinkeye's stage 4 script with great sucess.

If you wants something a little more full features and with a gui you could check out clonezilla.

If it's enterprise-wide backup then I would have thought something like Bacula or Arkeia would be the way to go.

+1 for Bacula.

I use it on a little ARM based Linkstation NAS running Debian. The "Director" (using sqlite for db) and "Storage Demon" run on the NAS, and the "File Demon" runs as a demon on the Gentoo box.
Each night it backs up either an incremental, differential or full. I've enabled compression which yields about 70%, but not used the encryption. And it has a nice GUI or console interface that can be run on the client.
