Problem with Wine after upgrade to libpng-1.5.4

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Problem with Wine after upgrade to libpng-1.5.4

I suddenly got the following message over the weekend while starting Quicken through Wine:
Your Quicken program files (not your data files) may have been damaged.
You will need to reinstall Quicken.
When I started it from the command line, I got the following block of text, repeated about 15 times:
libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.5.4
libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.4.8
libpng warning: Incompatible libpng version in application and library
err:menubuilder:convert_to_native_icon error 0x80004005 initializing encoder
I had just upgraded to libpng-1.5.4 and followed the directions to complete the upgrade from libpng-1.4.8, which meant running revdep-rebuild for files using libpng-14 and then removing libpng-1.4.8. Despite this, I am still getting the libpng warning. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling libpng, wine, and quicken, but no success. I also get this libpng warning when I try to install any Windows program under Wine.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Well, just a guess, but do you still have libpng-1.4 installed ?
If so, what's the result of:

Code: Select all

strings /usr/lib/wine/windowscodecs.dll.so | grep libpng

No, I removed libpng-1.4. But I'll try your suggestion anyway when I'm back home. Thanks.

The odd thing is that it says it was compiled with 1.5 but is running 1.4. Hmmm.

Same here:

Code: Select all

libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.5.4
libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.4.8
libpng warning: Incompatible libpng version in application and library
err:menubuilder:convert_to_native_icon error 0x80004005 initializing encoder
Probably related to 32 and 64 bit libraries. So until emul-linux-x86-baselibs is updated with libpng-1.5.x we'll get that warning.

I was able to get Wine apps going again by doing the following:

Code: Select all

emerge =media-libs/libpng-1.4.8
emerge wine
emerge libpng
Do not delete libpng-1.14 as suggested. That library needs to survive. You will now have libpng-1.5.5 installed (as of today) but the lingering library file from libpng-1.4.8, which apparently is the key to avoiding the compiled-with/running-with paradox.

Then (if you are like me and wiped out your .wine directory) reinstall and then run your Wine apps with your Wine compiled under libpng-1.4.8. I had no problem, even with using winetricks, which was compiled under libpng-1.5.4 (which has since been updated to libpng-1.5.5). I only use Quicken and Spotify, which can be installed directly from winetricks. I had iTunes running before (albeit badly), and that is pretty much useless, but I haven't tried massaging it into functionality yet. But Quicken 2009 Deluxe runs fine, and Spotify is perfect.

I hope this works for you.
