starting new gentoo install, havnt in years, a few questions

i'm an old gentoo user from 2004-2008, was busy with life, and didnt really have a computer to fool around with but i recently purchased an hp dv8t laptop. its the i7 820qm 64-bit quadcore, with 8 gigs of ram, the nvidia geforce gt 230m. i never installed linux on a laptop before, and i was curious if theres anything i should look out for or remember while doing my install. also was curious about the 64 bit vs 32 bit installation. i was had a 64bit install before, and everything i needed ran flawless, but i use flash allot more now than i did before, and i heard there was some issues with flash in 64 bit environments, or if there is any other issues with 64 bit installs, i dont think there is many but its a general question. i was also curious about the nvidia driver support. i know some of the newer models of nvidia geforce have the optimus technology. im pretty sure my card is support but i was curious if anyone came along any hickups while playing games, watching video's, etc etc with this card. none of this information is really necessary but i would appreachiate any help from anyone whose done an install on one of these machines, or knows the answers to any of these questions. thanks in advance for any of the help, and sorry if i didnt get the right thread. wasnt sure where to post a question like this, considering how vague it is.

Hi gnolreve.

With such a machine i suggest to use a 64 bit arch. It could benefit mostely by the 8GB RAM and the cpu performance. Wih such a PC compiling is fun!

In the meantime flash is no problem with the 64bit arch, cause there is a native 64-bit flashplayer available. But for fallback and other incompatible applications, i suggest to use the multilib profile.
I guess the nvidia card support should be no problem with the proprietary driver which i prefer cause its outstanding 2D/3D performance.

Much success for your install and welcome back.

Regards, Andy.

1. Flash: In my experience that shouldn't be a problem. You can try the recently released 64-bit version, but even with the 32-bit version running in nspluginwrapper, I haven't had any issue lately.
2. 64bit other: there are really no issues that I know of.
3. nvidia: my card works all right (except for two-card-xinerama-compositing), but I can't say anything regarding the optimus technology you mention.

If you are using X and a desktop environment; don't forget your ~/.xinitrc file! That is extremely important. Google "X setup gentoo" and "gnome setup gentoo". That was a lot of help to me when I did it the most recent time.

You have a lot of ram, one thing I would really suggest doing is making your portage tmp directory a tmpfs so all your temporary compile time file are being compiling in ram. I've personally found it to be slightly faster than a recompile on ccache.

I totally agree having /var/tmp/portage mounted as tmpfs will reduce compile times by loads unless you have incredibly fast disks
