Use network installation .ISO with USB stick?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Use network installation .ISO with USB stick?

Hi,

i've bought a new Xtreamer Ultra, and It comes with tweaked Ubuntu and stuff, as a true Gentoo user, I've wiped everything from there, bought internal 2.5inch HDD for Gentoo.

The problem is that Xtreamer has no CDROM and I don't have an external one, I will not buy one for 1 installation.

Is there a way to use network installation .ISO image via USB stick?

Like, plug USB, change in BIOS boot priority and let the installer run from USB? Someway to deploy the image to the USB stick?

Accidentally, I've killed my Gentoo installation on both PCs, so I have no Linux at this moment, Is it possible to make the stick via Windows? or I need Linux? If Linux, I will install it again, but I need to know how to make this bootable USB.

Thanks a lot,

Hi Fratyr,

maybe you could try UNetbootin. And it's available for Linux, Windows and OSX :)

Happy Gentoo installation :)

I think that this has worked for me before (though you need Linux to do it):

Code: Select all

dd if=/pathtodownloadlocation/gentoodvd.iso of=/dev/sda
This is assuming that your U.S.B. flash drive is /dev/sda.

Since you have no Linux, these instructions might help: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US ... or_Windows .
