Replacement for KDE apps

  • Quote

Post by devilheart » Tue May 31, 2011 10:02 am

Hi. My 7 years old notebook with only 1 GiB of ram can't run kde 4.6 smoothly enough. Memory gets filled pretty quickly and when starts swapping... hell breaks loose. So, I've installed fluxbox and now I'm looking for replacement for my apps, replacements that don't pull in too much deps. So, what I need is:

-a rss reader. Now I'm using akregator so I need something that allows me to download and reed multiple feeds
-a file manager. Now I'm using pcmanfm, but suggestions are well accepted
-a teminal emulator. Now I'm using konsole. Basically I need something with tab support

Any help is appreciated

On my desktop computer at work (Xeon 1 CPU, one Core, 2.3GHz and 1GiB Ram) I am working very smoothly with all KDE apps I like from OpenBox. That machine, too, is too old for a full KDE 4 system. The machine has an old nVidia 5200 PCI card, so fancy graphics stuff is a big no-no for me. I have installed kdebase-runtime-meta and from there simply what I use.

Well, Akregator belongs to the kdepim suite, I believe, and therefore has some additional dependencies. net-news/liferea is another News aggregator, maybe it suits your needs better? (http://liferea.sourceforge.net/)

Liferea could be a good choice if it did't pull in so much gnome stuff. My system is a laptop, 1GiB ram and an athlon64 3200+ cpu. I run it at 800MHz so it will not overheat, but the issue is the memory, not the raw processing power. Chrome eats up a lot of memory, but replacing it is not acceptable, so I'm thinning everything else

KDE3 is still somewhat maintained -- I have it working on my similarly specced sony TZ-90. You need the kde-sunset overlay.

I use Sakura as a terminal emulator and PCManFM as a file manager, but Thunar might also work well for you. I don't use RSS feeds, so I know not what to suggest for that.

My Toughbook admittedly has a dual-core C.P.U. (one of the early models with only 32-bit instructions), but it has only 1GB of R.A.M., and it runs KDE 4.62 well enough without swapping -- and this is with 3D acceleration enabled. The computer boots from an SDHC card, so it has no swap space at all, and I ran Konqueror, Pidgin, Skype, G.I.M.P., Libreoffice Writer, Konsole, Gwenview, and Dolphin simultaneously without a problem. I wonder what is filling your memory.

Chromium, followed by X. Skype also eats its share

I've moved from Akregator to Google Reader (mainly because it keeps feeds in sync between my PC, laptop and phone) and I've never looked back. Runs in a browser so no additional software required.

I know it's bit old thread, though I finally managed to replace Akregator on my side with something lightweight (Qt only dependency) while being functionally almost equal to Akregator (and features are added fast on) for those interested here's ebuild in bugzilla - https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401411 and homepage http://code.google.com/p/rss-guard/

cheers ...
