lspci -nn

would be more helpful than just vendor and device id's. (I just see 8086 for intel all over.) One can't even tell whether it is a desktop or notebook kernel at a glance (except for your cpuinfo, which suggests it is a bog standard 4 year old mobile c2d.)

Also it would be helpful to tell us what features it supports or doesn't. Is there any exotic hardware for which there was some effort to figure out the options. If so, please tell us about that. Still, I don't see how this helps anyone. And why is this present at this "Unsupported Software" section?

You weren't far off, as you set intel_agp and the in-kernel video driver as modules. That is a sure way to ask for problems. Since your machine has an Intel GPU, you need to be sure that you use the compiled in driver, and make sure you have KMS turned on. Relying on modules in this area is not a good idea...not even close.

You also need to add the following to that kernel's invocation in /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/grub.conf:

For instance, from my /etc/lilo.conf:

Click here for your new .config. Compile as is.

For the best results, please do the following:

1) Move your .config file out of your kernel source directory (/usr/src/linux-2.6.37-zen0 ).
2) Issue the command make mrproper. This is a destructive step. It returns the source to pristine condition. Unmoved .config files will be deleted!
3) Copy my .config into your source directory.
4) Issue the command make && make modules_install.
5) Install the kernel as you normally would, and reboot.
6) Once it boots, please post /var/log/dmesg so I can see how things loaded.

You did not follow instructions somewhere along the line. I know this because the VESA framebuffer is turned off in the kernel .config I sent. In the /var/log/dmesg I received from you, the vesa frame buffer is called. This cannot happen if you have installed my .config and followed instructions.

Long story short; you cannot mix vesa and KMS. One will fail...and then other one will follow suit. This is clearly what's happening in the /var/log/dmesg file.

Just to make sure that we cover the most pristine ground, please follow the instructions below. This is intended to clear out everything concerned with the kernel so we can be sure that things are loading properly.

Also note, this may be a fool's errand since you have a BIOS issue. For the moment, I'm going to pretend the BIOS issue isn't THE issue, and a mistake was the cause of the current problem.

1. Move your current .config file out of your kernel source directory (/usr/src/linux-2.6.37-zen0 ).

2. Issue the command make mrproper. This is a destructive step. It returns the source to pristine condition. Unmoved .config files will be deleted!

3, Copy my .config into your source directory.

4. Delete /lib64/modules/2.6.37-zen0. The next step will recreate that directory and its contents.

5. Issue the command make && make modules_install in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.37-zen0 directory.

6. Install the kernel as you normally would, and reboot.

7. Once it boots, please post /var/log/dmesg so I can see how things loaded.

If the issue remains, then you haven't gotten rid of the old kernel image. Until such time as that happens, we are in a holding pattern.

If you use grub, please post your /boot/grub/grub.conf file. If you use lilo, then post your /etc/lilo.conf file. That way I can make sure of where things are.

pappy, i confirm that it wasn't the kernel seeds' fault, but my filesystem had a lot of errors. when i formatted my hard drive and copied all the data back, my tty started working again.
