Qt 4.7.0 and KDE 4.5.2 - Yay!

  • Quote

Post by sam_i_am » Tue Oct 19, 2010 1:09 pm

I was able to compile KDE 4.5.2 with Qt 4.7.0 on a x86 system. There were a few breakages due to libpng as this system hasn't been updated in a while. But, once that was sorted out, rest of the compilation went smoothly. Been using it for about hour so far and all is well :-D

PS: Had to go through a few hoops to unmask Qt 4.7.0, add a few unstable packages to get everything going. But no big hassle.

hm, people keep telling how qt 4.7.0 was unmasked, but it isn't: http://www.google.com/custom?sa=Search& ... gentoo.org

That said, there are no issues with kde-4.5.3 and qt-4.7.0 on my system except for openoffice.

qt-4.7.0 is unmasked

  • Quote

Post by vdracula » Sun Nov 07, 2010 3:23 pm

qt-4.7.0 is unmasked. I know the danger of using ~amd64 testing, but still, it is unmasked. Beside of nvidia-drivers for the 2.3.36 kernel I haven't unmasked no other hardmasked package:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/portage/package.unmask
=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-260.19.12

Code: Select all

emerge -pv qt-core

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] x11-libs/qt-core-4.7.0  USE="exceptions glib iconv optimized-qmake pch qt3support ssl (-aqua) -debug -private-headers" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

That's interesting, because when you take a look at the search link that I posted, it appears to be masked. E.g.: http://packages.gentoo.org/package/x11-libs/qt-core

@vdracula: Maybe you need to recompile major parts of KDE after the Qt upgrade.

p.g.o doesn't update information shown very often.

I've recompilde whole qt, kdelibs. revdep-rebuild gives me nothing. (same on my second computer, wich is the same as my first)

packages.gentoo.org has not been updated to reflect the changes yet.

Running an ~x86 box, I just finished a qt-4.7.0 update (15 pkgs), having kde-4.5.3 already installed, and the reboot into kde went perfectly, so I guess it's binary compatible.

No problems so far.

Try emerge -ev @world to be certain.

By the way, do you really use Nepomuk? You can compile your system with -semantic-desktop to remove the dependency.

I'd love to compile kde without nepomuk/strigi, but in the past running kdesvn/kde-live versions pre kde-4.0 all the way to somewhere around kde4.4.x was problematic. Also, doesn't Gwenview and a few other kde pkgs depend on nepomuk?

Code: Select all

amd64 wrc # equery d nepomuk
 * These packages depend on nepomuk:
kde-base/kdebase-runtime-meta-9999 (!kdeprefix ? >=kde-base/nepomuk-9999[aqua=,-kdeprefix])
                                   (kdeprefix ? >=kde-base/nepomuk-9999:live[aqua=,kdeprefix])
kde-base/kdelibs-9999 (!kdeprefix ? >=kde-base/nepomuk-9999[aqua=,-kdeprefix])
                      (kdeprefix ? >=kde-base/nepomuk-9999:live[aqua=,kdeprefix])
amd64 wrc #
Considering the number of packages in kdelibs and kdebase-runtime-meta, I would think we probably can't get rid of nepomuk. If that's incorrect, please advise.

I do agree, and still maintain that for your generic desktop user with average hardware nepomuk/strigi is the linux equivalent of windows "file indexing," which I always disabled immediately on my windows installs in those days. If you have an i7 cpu and 8GB DDR3 ram, then OK- enable everything, it won't slow anything up.

I can't count the hours I've spent messing with nepomuk problems running kde-live, and even the regular kde point releases never seem to be without some problem. I'm sure it will be great at some point, and we all will wonder how we ever lived without the semantic-desktop, but for now I'd sure love pruning it from all my kde installs.

O.K. this goes a little bit too far away from the problem here.

There're people who like semantic desktop and those who don't.

Unfurtunately, this is not the problem here, whether to use semantic desktop or not.

Still, kmix and co crash on logout.

Anyone has a solution??

Just updated to qt-4.7 at the weekend - got kde 4.5.3 here on ~amd64.

Seems to have gone relatively smoothly _however_ on each of my desktops I now have bordered, transparent box, like an empty window or widget or something. taking up 2/3 pf the screen starting in the top left hand corner. It isn't obtrusive, but it only appeared after I rebooted.

I've tried recompiling kdelibs, kwin and the plasma bits, but to no avail. I realise the solution to this is probably to delete .kde4

Yes, the shadow-box or smal desktop inside desktop-box is also appearing from time to time (was appearing also in 4.5.2)

Yay - fixed it. Disabled desktop effects, apply, re-enabled them. The box has gone. Although I fear it may return...

Check this thread for more victims of the translucent orphan widget:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-848937.html

It seems to have gone away for me too, and I have no idea what I did.

I suggest you file a bug report:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/

You can also ask in #gentoo-kde on freenode, which is not a bad way to draw attention of the developers to your issue.

Hello!
I also have segmentation faults on logout with kmix and ksmserver. ~amd64 here.
Did rebuilding anything changed it for someone?

I updated my box last night and for my concern, it's working pretty good.

I don't have any problem with KDE right now.

Updated to KDE 4.5.3 over the weekend. The only problem I'm seeing is that suspend-to-ram doesn't work. Nothing happens when I select that. Had this happen for 4.5.2 as well.

I have exactly the same problem - I found out that it is somehow connected to QtCurve a background image and gradient (used tenuto-light). With oxygen it works also with different QtCurve config it works.
